Depends. The trick is to throw it in the air right before the tip you're holding burns. If you get it off right it's a pretty cool look and you don't singe your fingers. Just be careful with it.

some guy at a magic shop showed me some. He just put it in my hand and lit it! it hurt for a couple minutes. :(

If the piece isn't very big, and you're not closing your hand around it, you may feel nothing. Or you may feel a bit of discomfort. But you most likely will not get burnt. But it IS fire, and the risk of burning yourself is always there.

I don't recommend holding it. And ALWAYS, practice with your flash paper AWAY from your flash paper stash. Even igniting a single sheet of flash paper will produce enough heat to cause you bad burns.

I used to be able to hold it and not get burned. you just need to build up a calice. other than that just come up with a presentation where you light it and throw it in the air. like you could make sure they ar far enough away and light it then throw it to them to catch it. Just make sure that the distance is great enough so the fire isn't still burnig haha
