This has been talked about a lot before. But I will start. I picked other, because I do both. I think the majority of magicians here will agree that having both is the best way.

Working solely for tips is a dumb idea in my opinion. I think it devalues your time, and yourself. You may be a great magician, but have a slow day and come out with nothing. Why risk it. Your time is valuable.

That's for sure Fallingblood. Only a kid or an idiot would work for tips only.

This is just a bit of bragging on my part now. I have been doing this for 10 years as a full time performer and for 2 years prior as a part timer. I am still performing my usual gigs but just bought out a manufacturing company to run as a "retirement plan." It has nothing to do with magic, it is a manufacturer of arts and crafts, small business. So I'll be running it and performing both as a full time way of making a living.

Not bad to be able to buy a company from just working as an entertainer, and not a big name entertainer either. Anyone can do the same IF they take the time to LEARN, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, REHEARSE, REHEARSE and not give up when things seem overwhelming. Also use spell check on everything. (OK just kidding about the spell check.)

Peter, brag all you want. I've gotten plenty of great advice from your bragging.
