i have recently read about an 1894-S Barber dime, sold for almost $1.6 million.
impresive price. why do people pay such money for coins?
how much money would you give for a rare coin?

I know it's not about coins, but there is this rare stamp...it's a biplane that was printed upside down by mistake. Only 23 or 24 were printed beforee they noticed, so those became collector's items...

At last count I think one of them is worth over $2 million dollars, as long as it's not actually placed on a letter and mailed. So you can see how mailing a bill early in the morning when you are half asleep, may be a bad idea, the night after you look over your stamp collection.

Anyway, I heard that this guy actually used to own one of those stamps, and ...was getting a divorce... yup you guessed it, the wife was pissed he got to keep the stamps, so she paid the electric bill with a bunch of his collectibles... including the upside down bi-plane. That is why I don't collect rare coins, or stamps... I collect cash. And magic DVD's,...Books...effects... ya, I am addicted.

If you guys would have read it further, you would see that only 10 of those dimes made in that year are known of. That means out of the 24 made, 14 of them are floating around out there somewhere waiting to be found!!!

I suppose coin collectors would laugh at someone paying over $100 for a deck of Jerry's Nuggets too.

It's funny what stuff people obcess over.

I recall hearing about a certain card from the yu-gi-oh game that was only produced for around 20 members of Konami's staff. One member purchased the other copies and destroyed all but 5. He kept one and sold the other 4 for several thousand dollars each. The card had a valuable ability in the game that provided a nearly unfair advantage to the user - so apparently avid gamers found it worthwhile.

Bieng a numismatist myself, I can see where people would pay that much. I have spent a lot of money on coins, not nearly that much, but a lot. Aside from magic, that is my hobby. It is all a matter of what you like. If it is really rare, what is the worst that could happen? You sell it for what you paid for it? That is the thing for me, almost like an investment, although more fun than money in the bank. Like DaveV said, "It is all about perception."

Seriously who finds these coins and think to themselves this coin could be worth millions. if i ever found a coin like that i would no doubt chuck it in the bin

I think the problem I have with collecting coins would be, I would take forever when I went to the store. At the moment I do not know what any coins are worth. So if I want a soda, and have 4 quarters I spend a dollar in quarters and got the soda.

Now say i decide to start collecting coins. I cannot just spend coins without first inspecting them for year, and type, quality, rarity... designs...etc... every time I got change from the store I'd need to check all my change against the book of coins etc for value...then if I found coins of value, I would have to seal it up and protect it, and be careful not to accidentally spend it...

And then if I were lucky enough to find a dime worth a million mucks or whatever... Imagine the heart attack if before you could out it somewhere safe something happened like..a black out,and you get hit on the head , and pass out... Now you have no idea where it is, it's dark...God forbid you're kid takes it and uses it to buy a soda...

I would starve from an inability to spend any coins i had until i had throughly researched them...
