It's legal to pay somebody $2.30 an hour?
That's ridiculous, I work at McDonald's and get more than that  .

Yes, The restaurant business has it's own minimum wage. It doesn't apply to you because you are not dependent on tips like the servers are. A good server can very easily make between $100 to 300 a shift depending on the type of restaurant.

You've all got some really good arguments here. I'm still torn on the issue but I am leaning more towards the advice in the sticky thread (The "Almost" Complete one)

If they offer a tip, redirect it towards the wait-staff, and say that the best tip they can give is a compliment to the managment. Second time do basically the same thing. On the third time that the same customer offers a tip, take it, but let them know that you expect them to also tip the server, and tell the host/manager that they enjoyed the show. Then split with the wait staff.

I may have gotten some of his points changed around, but the general idea is there. It seems to be the fine line between Robert's and Paddy's perspectives. You did your best to make everyone happy, and in the end, everyone ends up pleased with the outcome. Customer got to show appreciation, manager got a compliment for once, waiter gets more $$, and you don't have to "beg" for your money.
