As a cards guy, I'd have to say BTP, an ID, and a deck of bikes.

No worries. Born to Perform (BTP) by Oz Pearlman is a great beginners DVD. Many good sleights and flourishes, and 4 tricks, including an Ambitious Card Routine (ACR, where a chosen card keeps "jumping" to the top of the deck). ID is the invisible deck, where a spectator names a card, and it appears to be the only one face down. The Royal Road is great and in-depth if you like books. I find DVDs are easier to learn from, especially for learning fundamentals.

There is no top 3, all the effects I buy are top quality because I make them so. Effects don't make a magician, a magician makes an effect. You should be asking people's "favorites" maybe. But most stuff I buy here is from the SOC anyway, so whether Penguin sells it or not is irrelevant.

Good point. I've gotten better reactions from the trick where a spec takes a card and you glimpse the above card and use it to find the selection than from my ACR when I was starting with it. However, with the best possible performance, flashier tricks can be more stunning.
