Different brands may vary in their effectiveness, and some balloons pop easier than others, but experiment with "Goo Gone" or "Goof Off" The stuff rapidly (I mean RAPIDLY) breaks down latex. You can use a TT or a 35MM film canister with a cotton ball soaked in the stuff to store it before use. Touch a wet finger to an unsuspecting balloon and it will (should) pop in about 10 seconds or so.

Are you serious! That's awesome! I want to go try that now SO badly! :D

That's so cool! Thanks Dave, I'll go try that!

I tried the Goo Gone stuff on several balloons and it worked! For one of them it took like 5 sec. For another it took about 1 and a 1/2 min. I guess it varies on the material and stress on the balloon. Really cool stuff! Even if you don't perform it as a magic item. Cool to do on yourself or show your friends!

If you want to give the impression of a balloon growing and shrinking you could use a hot/cold principle. If you wanted to make a balloon inflate in your hand put an inflated balloon in the freezer and it will shrink real small. then take it out and hold it in your hand it will "magically" inflate.

Gonna be experimenting with the goo gone but I wanted to see if anybody else has already been testing.
1. what size balloon is best?
2. how much air in the balloon?
3. where on the balloon is the best place for the work?
4. best storage/retrieval system? (how do you get it on your finger?)
5. any experimentation with dilution?

Thanks, I will be posting my finding for others.

1. Round
2. Fully inflated, more the better
3. At it's thinnest point, probably on the side. Easily applied by just holding between your hands
4. Rubber (not plastic) TT with soaked cotton ball inside. Or, pill bottle in pocket.
5. Even at full strength, it's "iffy"

Magic Smith Sells a prop that pops balloons. If I remember right it can be held by a spectator when it actually pops.

Take a second balloon and cut the stem off. Tie it in a knot and with double-sided tape stick it in another location on the inflated balloon. Now you can conceal the REAL balloon stem anywhere, such as between your fingers, etc.

For a hands-off approach think of a r/c rig built into a base that would allow the servomechanism to act as a pneumatic break and control the air flow out of the balloon.

This is all very exotic. It would be much easier to rig a thumb tack to a TT and punch a hole into one of the needle-thru-balloon areas. Or rig a pin or wire from necktie clip to project invisibly out in front of you and pierce (not pop) the balloon that way.
