Here are some basic tips on how to keep your Expanded Shell in its best condition:

1. When not using the Expanded Shell, always keep it over a regular coin. This will ensure the Expanded Shell does not lose it's shape.
2. If a coin gets stuck in the Expanded Shell, DO NOT shake it inside a glass. That will only damage the coin more. Buy a Bang Ring and use that to take the coin out.
3. Try not to drop the coin, that will damage the Expanded Shell .
4. If the Expanded Shell has a small dent in it, use a wooden dowell to re-round the edge of the Expanded Shell. You can also put a coin inside the Expanded Shell, and roll it on a hard surface. Then use a Bang Ring to get the coin out of the Expanded Shell.
5. To further expand your Expanded Shell, put a dollar bill over the mouth side of the Expanded Shell. Then push an English Penny inside the Expanded Shell. Pull out the English Penny using the dollar bill or use a Bang Ring.

In my experience, this is what I have found:

Todd Lassen > Schoolcraft > Johnson Magic > Tango Magic > Sasco

Those are the main coin gaffers, but there are many other custom guys.

Good information here. Let's sticky this for a little while and see if others get use out of it.

Did you post this on theory11? Because I read this exact same post over there about 5 minutes before I read this one. If you didn't post it over there, someone else is taking credit for your work, so I'd go over there and take care of it.

I have Royal Magic's Chinese Coin Shell, and it's really bad. It doesn't fit over a half dollar, is really loose on their Chinese Coin, and looks terrible from the underneath. I can only assume their Shells using real coins are worse.

Go with Johnson. If you're looking for Chinese Coins, Johnson makes the Hong Kong Coin which is an Expanded Shell for their half dollar. If you're looking for real currencies, Johnson is good.

Sasco and Tango are not terrible, but not great. I would get Tango over Sasco.

I have an Expanded Shell from Todd Lassen and love it!

I second this...

...the actual Chinese coin itself isn't all that horrible (which is why I bought the set), but it doesn't have a genuine feel to it and the paint can chip. As for the shell, it's really as horrible as described...

The Royal Magic Chinese coins can't chip; I don't think they're even painted.

Hmmmm, I'm pretty sure I have the same set you guys were discussing; here is the page. How long ago did you buy your set? I bought mine about two months ago... maybe they're making them differently? As for the "chipping", it's on the very edge of the gold trim of the coin (not the shell, which I don't even use). I would upload a pic, but it seems like too much work ^_^ Either way, I wouldn't really recommend this set...

I bought mine a couple of months ago. I know the guys from Fun Inc. and I'm pretty sure they've been making them the same way since they came out. I do have one Chinese coin from them from many years ago that's a slightly different color.

If the paint is chipping, what color is underneath? I'm just curious...

But as for the Chinese coins alone, they are excellent.

Royal Magic produces low quality coins. Johnson IS more expensive, and ISN'T sold on Penguin, but you'll be happy with it.

Low quality in what way? It doesn't look like an actual coin?

I was thinking of this one - http://www.funinc.com/xcart/product.php ... t=0&page=1
