There are so many topics already covering this.

But... if you dont already own Royal Road to Card Magic, Mark Wilsons Complete Card Magic or Any of the Card Colleges. I would recommend those.

Others will probably recommend Born to Perform by Oz. Its alright, but everything taught in it, can be found in those books.

And besides, your the one that makes the trick powerfull.

I would recommend books. DVD's are fantastic, yet books contain more effects and more bang for your buck. RRTCM is a great book to start with...as Dave suggested. I'd also recommend The Expert At The Card Table by Erdnase. Then maybe Counts, Cuts and Subtleties (Mentzer), then perhaps Card Control and Principles & Deceptions (Buckley). These books will give you much of the knowledge you'll need to perform Card Magic for many, many years.

I agree with Expert at the Card Table as the sleights you will learn will be huge for applying to impromptu work with regular decks.

I would suggest these DVD's since I bought them for the specific reason to do impromptu card magic.

Royal Road to Card Magic - DVD's

Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracle - DVD's

Expert Card Techniques: Close-up Table Magic - Book

Now even though this is a book, it has so many different card tricks, you'll get overwhelmed and not sure where to start first. This is basically a follow up to the Royal Road to Card Magic, with hundred of card effects do to after learning the basics from the Royal Road to Card Magic.

Cameron Francis just released a very good e-book on impromptu card magic called Moment's Notice.

One of the best tricks you can do with a borrowed deck is back in time by Jay sankey! The look on their faces when the card changes in thier hand is priceless.
