Hey folks,

I'm desperately looking for a card effect that I saw years ago. The magician lays the deck of cards out face down and literally says "Find me the 6 of hearts*" and the spectator picks a card (the magician doesn't touch the cards, or at least not noticably). She then proceeded to ask me to find her a series of several other cards, and with apparently free choice (and again without her touching the cards) I selected the correct one every time. This was perhaps my favourite effect, as it conveys such an illusion of mental intimacy (I think it left quite an effect because I totally had a massive crush on the girl performing the effect at the time).

Anyhoo, if this effect is familiar to anyone then I'd love to know what it's called. As I'm not massively travelled in the realms of card magic, I apologise if it's a really common effect and I'm wasting anyone's time by asking.
Thanks,
Paul

*or any other card at all.

This trick has lots of variations using the same technique. I have no idea what the actual name of it might be, but I think it's been around a while and is pretty well known. I can whip up a quick set of instructions on how to perform it. I don't know if it counts as exposure though, unless the actual originator of this technique is out there selling it somewhere... but I really wouldn't know.

That'd be pretty awesome, thanks. Obviously we'll need to find out if it's ok to pass it on first, but if it's ok then I definitely owe you one :)

It's the very first trick in the book Scarne on Card Tricks.

It almost sounds like "Perfect" by Mark Mason.
You can buy it here on Penguin.
