If i asked somebody, like a juggler for instance, where they learnt their craft and they said some tacky response like "Oh i am not a juggler i am just trying to catch these" or whatever they would say if they were an idiot, i would walk away thinking he was a rude twit.
I feel really boring !!! I am sorry, I am not trying to be a complete killjoy.
Maybe I should ask everybody what they say if they ask again wanting an actual answer ? Or do you just repeat yourself or say another joke ?
"...Just trying to catch these."

My kind of humor.
It depends on the personality one emits as to what responses go over well but even then not everyone is going to respond the same. Who knows what kind of a day the spectator is having or what's going on in their life in relation to how open they are to various comments.
What I might say all depends on who I am performing for and they personality they are displaying. If they are talkative or insistent during the middle of my performance I might
not want to feed a discussion. I may something like this and add a distraction, "...From the same place I learned this one. Here, hold this." I may say that we aren't quite at the Q&A (question and answer) segment of this conference. If they seem truly sincere and eager I'll tell'm, PENGUIN MAGIC and refer them to here. Haven't you noticed all the new members lately?
How about letting them know through a routine such as a card effect?
"When I first started out I began to perform for one or two people."
[Produce an Ace and a Two or a couple of Jacks]
Then as I began to improve I performed for more people"
[Produce a Three, Four and Five or a few more Jacks]
And NOW I perform for Kings and Queens!
[Change the cards to Kings and Queens]
Adjust to your liking.
