While this is still current...this has irked me for some time.

Gerry McCambridge uses the popularity of the show a little too deceptivly.
At www.mentalist.com;

this is his current banner:

and here's the first line on his page:

"You’ve seen CBS’ hit TV show, Now see the real thing!"

Gerry had a show (on NBC) called "The Mentalist" it was a one off magic special. As far as I know, he has no connection to the current CBS show.

Does anyone else find it a little too misleading?

Patrick Jane's skills are definitely learnable skills. You just have to force yourself to learn them. Like Sherlock Holmes Jane never ignores the small details in his surroundings. Also you have to realize that everything around you can tell you some type of story. There is a book called Snoopology by Sam Gosling. Its basically a book about profiling a person according to their stuff. Not only what they own but,where its positioned, & how it is positioned. These things can tell you alot about a person. Also use your basic senses, your sense of hearing,smell,touch, & taste. We have seen Jane many times kneel on the ground next to a body or a severed hand & smell it. He also observes where & how it is placed & the physical condition. On top of this just use your intuition & common knowledge. Anybody with enough self discipline can be as good as Patrick Jane.

Most of what you just described there is just good detective work. The mentalist is a highly hollywood-ised point of view on how a mentalist thinks. Also, a lot of the "he looks at someone's stuff and knows about them" is basically just generalizations. Not always true, but can be a good assumption.
