I really like the mentalism effect when you ask someone to think of someone's name and you guess it. Is there any trick or dvd that show that effect without the need of them to write it down on a paper just that they think of it and you guess it?

Unless you're using one of those devices that reads the spectator's brainwaves and translates them into an image of what they're thinking, the only way you're going to be able to simulate mind reading is either to force the spectator to think of something, or write it down (or otherwise communicate it to you).

If you saw the effect on TV, they most likely cut out an important part of the routine in order to disguise the method.

As far as devices that attempt to actually read the human mind go, the best I know of are called functional magnetic resonance scanners, but they're quite expensive. They range from $1 million to $2.3 million, and cost a couple of thousand dollars per performance.

And they don't give a particularly clear image of what the spectator is thinking. And the spectator might get rather suspicious because the gimmick is massive.

You're probably better off going down the "writing stuff down" option. The best gimmick I've personally come across is the Mascot Moth, although there are others. Do a search on the forums for the word "impression".

Hahaha, I personally think this is the best option. I am sure with clever patter and brilliant routining it would fool the dumbest spectator.

Curveball-Oz Pearlman is a very practical way to show that you got the name correct that someone was thinking of. I use this trick very often due to it being very impromptu. All you need it someone with a cell phone. They think of a person's name from their contact list, and you get it right. They never say a word, and they never write anything down. This requires no props or gimmicks. You never look at the phone.
