Over Thanksgiving, I taught my little cousin a few easy, self-working card tricks. She really enjoyed doing them and asked for a magic book for Christmas. Does anybody have any recommendations? She is 8 years old.

I think the first book I ever had as a kid was the Klutz Book of Magic, but it appears to be out of print. I think I found a place that still has some to sell, but would like to know if anybody else can offer any other suggestions. I would prefer to give her a book as opposed to a magic set.

My first instinct (and I know magicians might jump on me for this) is to look into getting her a magic kit. To me, every child who's interested in magic should get their "first kit". Not only that, but it helps you gauge her interest with a small investment. I know Fantasma is one of the big names in the kids magic business. If you're looking for a book based product, Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic is the gold standard for the aspiring magician. It has everything one would need to learn to get going on any classic discipline of magic including cards, coins, ropes, billiards, an entire cups and balls routine, and stage illusions.
