I learned them from the internet isn't something I would say. In my opinion it cheapens what we do and gives hecklers something to go by. I usually just say that I make them up as I go along. I tell them that I don't even know what I'm doing half the time.

If they ask you that you should really attack them.

Statement #12 justifying why people keep quiet during my magic tricks. ^^

I didn't learn them from anywhere, I took 45 vitamin C pills once when I was young and since then I've been able to do the wierdest things, now, watch this coin...

The Bible, you would be amazed the stuff they put in there!

That's about all I can come up with off the cuff, incidently I have used the bible one and the next day seen about 3 people flicking through them when I see them at school the next day. I doubt you will like these at all but they seemed like a good idea at the time.

One off-the-top-of-my-head idea is to tell a mystical story about how you travelled to an ancient land and climbed a mountain to find the all-knowing one (you can pad this story out so it lasts about five minutes - describe the journey in detail and the different people you asked for directons). Then say that you finally got to the all knowing one and he told you where to get the tricks.

If there are still people haven't wandered off or fallen asleep from boredom, and they ask you again where you got them from, tell them that to find out they have to see the all-knowing one.

Or another favourite is to tell the guy who asked you that he was the one that taught the trick. When he denies it, say that he also taught you a way to erase people's memories and you used it on him.

Other, more snappy responses are:
- Yo mama/your mom/your mother!
- That guy over there (point to someone random - make sure that he/she doesn't know how the tricks are done or you'll be screwed)
- That's a secret too.
- I'd tell you but then I'd have to kill you.

Here are some of the lines I use

1. I'd tell you but then the FBI would be all over me.
2. Well, it all started X years ago when I was abducted by aliens.
3. I'd tell you but then I'd have to kill you.
4. Are you sure you really want to know. The answer is.....well....trust me..you wouldn't like it.
5. Well, first I quit my job, then I got rid of my friends, then I dumped my girl friend, and then I sat in my room for a year and practiced.
6. (just smile)
7. Where'd I learn magic? I don't remember.
8. Where'd I learn magic? Wow. Most just ask "how'd you do that?"
I'll give you my response for that instead: "that'll cost extra."

Craig

If they are genuinely interested I will recommend a couple books. Otherwise, I will tell the truth..."Many different sources, I read a lot, talk to different people, blah, blah".
If you spit out an insulting one liner then people will think that you are a smart*** and will not enjoy your performance at all.

I do have an unusually high IQ for my age, and I use that to my advantage...

I can think of long, confusing reasons why I don't want to tell people this or why I didn't have my homework and all....

Spec."How'd ya do that?"
me"well.. I was once wanting a job at a grocerie store. in this case, Kroger..." and patter on from there... (WARNING!!! ONLY WORKS ON SMALL CROUDS. PEOPLE WILL GET BORED WITH YOUR STORY AND MIGHT LEAVE.)

to be honest, it might sound lame... but to add a level of mystery and to make the audience believe more and not just be entertained, i always say, its not something you can just learn... they usually back off and snicker, and you can tell it kind of intrests them. thats only if, you are that sort of magician... mysterious... u know what i mean.

I usually give them an honest answer (to family and friends). I usually tell them how I started with Magic for Dummies, which I did.
