Do the switch move from the ambitious card routine that Daryl does, that usually fools someone if they pick up on a DL in the ambitious card routine. Don't know if that helps for other situations though.

I had someone once accuse my of getting two cards once, and they were right, so I cupped the cards in my hand and let the bottom one fall face down on the table while keeping the top one hidden in my palm, then move the deck from my left hand into the right hand (ditching the card on the top of the deck) and tell them "I did? Show it to me!", while pointing at the single card with my left hand.

It worked, I lost that card in the deck and started the trick over with a new selection.

IMO if you get cought with a double you souldn't be out performing.

A comment like "that's two cards" is easy to handle, but what if they say"Why don't you show us the top card"?

Do a One-card DL.

You could say that the top card doesn't count and vanish it (I like backhand palming it). or you could pretend you didn'ty hear them. If you say that he shouldn't be preforming if people can see his DL, what happens if you preform with a borrowed deck and the cards your double lifting are bent in opposite directions?

I try not to DL with a borrowed deck, for that very reason. I'll ususally do Oz's Biddle Trick, which doesn't require it, if I'm using a borrowed deck.

i dont know wat this move is called, but u strip off the top card and its invisable so you end up just holding one card, then obvioulsy u show them its only one card

That's the one-card DL, or at least a variation.

I'm going to echo colin and say if you're getting caught, do more practise!!!

Also, If using a borrowed deck, I like to 'check for jokers', that way I can judge the condition of the deck.

If the deck's too old, I don't to a trick requiring precise handling.

Finally, if you DO get caught, take one of the two cards, tell the spec it's a souvenier for them, and go into a different trick.

Lay off the beginners, and drop the attitude.

He's here because he knows he needs more practice and is looking for advice.

Practice in front of a mirror (something I personally HATE) and in front of friends will only take you so far...

That's the big difference between being

a pro
an amateur magician
a 'magic maniac' who knows and has practiced a number of tricks, but hasn't got the 'magic'

you might not have actually gotten caught... there are a number of laymen who know about double lifts..

I got 'caught' doing a DL last night after I had used a classic pass...

somebody had shown the spectator the marlowe tilt and DL in the past, and he started telling everybody he KNEW what was going on...

since he was dead wrong, I handed him the deck, and let him look at the top cards, shuffle, etc...

then I did it again, with the card face up...

he shut up...

But be careful not to assume you have been caught just because somebody says they have caught you...

experience IN PERFORMANCE will teach you alot about how to control the crowd ...

I think ebeta has made a valid point, often people will just say, I saw that or there are two cards, they are only really guessing, they just want to see what you will do to prove them right or wrong, all the same, do make sure you find a cover in case you genuinely get caught.
