I think that beyond secrets is not necessary, it has some good advice, but it has more filler. It should have been condenced down to about 75 pages.

Thanks man for the post. good job. Just one thing though, Larry Andersons 4 Video set has great magic on it (mostly beginner) but the performances just make me sick. Each trick starts out with the audience laughing and then Larry shows them a trick, every single time!!! And the audience is in on the trick, you can tell. The audience is the same every single time but they are still pretty good videos, though I don't think Penguin carries them. Great post!

Why not?

I'm a working magician who's been studying magic for 30 years. Right now, there are at least three effects from Magic for Dummies in my working repertoire; there are about ten effects/gags that I've used sporadically, and at least six others that are definitely worth doing but just don't fit my style or the venues I work -- not too shabby for a book I picked up for $10.

What exactly isn't good about it?

The three that I use in my regular performances are You Do as I Do, Sheep & Thieves, and Dream a Card, Any Card.

I didn't learn You Do As I Do from MFD; it was actually one of the first effects I learned almost 30 years ago. The Sheep & Thieves handling in MFD is a simplified version of an effect which can be found in Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. Dream a Card, Any Card was contributed to MFD by Daryl and is a version of his "Untouched" effect. I've worked out my own presentation for each of these effects, although there's nothing wrong with using the patter provided in the book as a starting point.

I've also started doing Chad Long's Shuffling Lesson, which is also found in one of the Art of Astonishment books.

THere are quite a few other effects I'd recommend -- some I do sporadically, some are just not my style. I'll post a list of those later today.
