Not quite. The challenge was that Houdini could figure out any trick shown to him at least three time. Vernon showed him the most basic ACR and did it 7 times. Houdini worked for days and couldn't figure the effect out. The reason was because Vernon showed him a version using a double backed card, which weren't the most common thing around. Once the word got out, everyone wanted to see the trick that fooled Houdini, so Vernon would change the trick from table to table and get away with the most basic effect because people were above trying to figure it out because it fooled Houdini. They thought that if it was that good, they would never be able to see it.

Dai Vernon is truely "The Professor". Period, end of story... thats all you have to know. He is probly as well known in magic (to us magicians) as Houdini!

I just found out that there is a series of eight DVDs featuring Dai Vernon. These DVDs are taken from footage taken in 1982. The professor teaches on these dvds and one of the cohosts is Michael Ammar. I have ordered a copy for myself but have yet to recieve it. For those of you interested in seeing The Professor in action the dvd series is entitled "Dai Vernon Revelations" and is available in various magic shops other than penguin.

That is one of the best sets of videos ever. I'm picking them all up shortly.

It was also shot in St. John's Newfoundland.

And, the man who owned the company who originally produced it (Hans Zahn/Videonics) is a friend of my father.

Well, almost... It's David Verner. David Frederick Wingfield Verner to be exact.

On the east coast Dai is pronounced "Day" as they knew him first as David. When he moved out west, the magicians had only read about him so they thought Dai was pronounced "Die." So, among the "old school" magicians who knew him you could sometimes tell where they knew him from by the way they pronounced his first name.
