Kid shows need to have color and flashy tricks and illusions in them. Something that will keep kids attention because trust me. They get off track easily. You might even have some shows that make you want to quit kid shows totally. But don't, there are going to be bad ones but its mostly not your fault because you came to the show prepared. Everyone knows you are human. I recommend get the DVD " Magic for under 5" . This will help you deal with kids. I also suggest getting a lot of silks and colorful things. You souldn't do fire at a show, and I don't, but kids like it, they will keep asking for it. But don't do it. Be funny during you show act goofy. Also, make sure that the kids are having fun and make it look like they are doing the magic. The parents will love that. And to earn more money. This is how you earn a little extra money!

If you promise a routine for only 30 minutes. At the end of a show while everyone is watching. Say this, "Okay boys and girls, since you have been such a good audience I am going to do a little bit more magic for no extra charge, if this is okay with the parents" you then look straight up and make eye contact with the parents. They will pretty much always say yes. And you get tipped for doing extra in your show. I also do about two tricks for the parents, that will suit them, that they will understand but the kids won't. The kids won't be watching.

I also believe you need to look at the audience before the show and point out who I want to be my assistant. Try to pick someone not to energetic but not to calm. Another way to do this is tell the kids during your show that you need help from someone. Most of the kids will raise their hands and some won't. Someone told me once not to pick the kids that are screaming and not to pick the kids that are just sitting there without there hand up. Pick someone that is nuetral, someone who has their hand up but is still sitting quitely.

Bring business cards. You need to bring business cards. Do a flashy trick with them. "Hot Leads" by Jim Pace is perfect. I usually go up to the person at the beginning of the show who is putting on the party and do this trick for them. I tell them, " Let me give you a card, after the show it might be kind of hecktic," I do this trick and hand them the card. They are astonished. The rest of the day/night they will send people to you asking for a card because they want to see they trick.

Good Luck!

John

Hmm... although it's not a long one, I still find it had some good tips. As you said, they like colorful illusions (Strat-O-Sphere, ABC blocks, production tubes with lots of silks). Good job.

Thanks, I was typing it in notepad and it looked longer. Oh well, it had pretty much everything I needed to say in it.

P.S

No offence but you said not to do a fire effect, but you say that you perform Hot Leads by Jim Pace. Isn't that a fire effect?

Yes, but I also said that I do it for the adults at the party. You know the parents who run the thing. Because the kids don't pay for it.
