Has anyone done this before. A lot of kids have birthday parties with a Harry Potter theme. Has anyone used Harry Potter spells in their shows? If so, what kinds of effects did you incorporate those spells to? Consider the kids to be around 7 & 8 yrs old.

I know about "Aparecium" which is used to reveal invisible ink. This could be used with the magic coloring book.

Any other ideas?

Alohomora, handcuff/lock escape.

Avis, dove production.

Confundus Charm, 3 shell game.

Engorgio, make something larger.

Incendio, anything flash papery, (sets an object on fire)

Legilimens, mind reading (allows the caster access to taregets thoughts and feelings)

Orchideous, cerates a bunch of flowers from wand.

Reducio, make something smaller.

Relashio, Creates a jet of firey sparks from the caster's wand, underwater it causes a jet of hot water.

Scourgify, The scouring charm, used to clean an object or area.

Serpensortia, snake appears from wand.

Waddiwasi, Causes a small soft mass, such as a piece of chewing gum, to fly to wherever the caster directs it.

Wingardium Leviosa, any levitation.

I'm sure you can all come up with some ideas for what to do with some of those, just the ones I can think of right now. And I'm sure J K Rowling won't sue us for doing them. :)

For more details you can try here for research.

I have thought about that too but unfortunately where I live a lot of the parents and teacher do not approve of Harry Potter. They think it is the Devils work. I think that is outrageous, but either way I do not use it just to make those people happy, Unless it was requested then I would do it.

This is a good point...and I have never used anything like this in my show. However, for this particular party I have been hired to do, it was a specific request for me to incorporate Harry Potter spells into my show. Then they stated that they didn't want any scorcery because they are Christian. Hmm. That's interesting.

Arkesus. These are great. I had looked through a few on a website, but I thought it would be good to know what kinds of effects others had done with certain spells. One in particular that you mentioned is one I was going to look up today, which is to make something larger (Engorgio). I will use this with the 8ft appearing straw.

Many thanks.

No problem Creecy, I hope it goes well for you. If you can get one, you could do the flying broom illusion by Andrew Mayne too.

Flying Broom? Well I think I'll pass on that one since the party is in someone's house. The last thing I need to worry about is nocking some urn over with a passed-away relative...or giving some kid a bloody nose when the broom swings by and hits them in the face.

It would be an appropriate effect with the proper amount of room though.

Lol, it takes up as much room as the broom is long, it doesn't go anywhere, you sit on it and are seen to levitate, as if flying on a broom.

towards the end of the clip

You should be careful with the Harry speak. The author did research all of the spells in her books and they are "actual" spells. You could realy affend someone.

The entries below include speculations on the possible etymologies of spell incantations. It is wise to keep in mind the limits of such speculation while reading. Ms. Rowling is not a linguist, and her aim is primarily to tell a good story, not to create a consistent linguistic system. Thus, one should not expect the use of "magical" language in the books to be entirely consistent. One can speculate about the possible origins of various spell incantations or terms, but one should not necessarily expect the results to be consistent in themselves or with the histories of other languages. For this reason, there is often no real Latin derivation of spell incantations, or any other "magical terms". This is not meant to take away from the fun of speculating about it, but to caution the reader to remember that the world of Harry Potter is primarily the world of a good story.

This is a follow-up. I incorporated numerous Harry Potter spells into my show for this one birthday party and it turned out great. In addition to some of the ones suggested here, I also managed to find many others that were appropriate in various areas. I didn't change my show...I simply used spells that could correspond to the effect being performed. I got all of the kids to help me with the spells by saying them with me. They had a ball and so did I. I don't plan on advertising that I do a Harry Potter show, but I would certainly do it again the same way should the request arise again. I have everything written down for future use. The kids liked the fact that I was teaching them the spells and what they did. And to my surprize, on some of the spells, they would tell me what they were for before I had the chance to tell them. 6 yr olds. Pretty smart kids.

i did a show for barnes and noble in honor of the new book coming out. They told me that i was unable to do a show with tricks having to do with harry potter because Barnes and Noble could get in trouble for it. Because it was copy righted it is illegal.

HOwever, that was for a big show. If you are just doing a birthdya party then i am sure you will be fine. Its just something to think about. If you decide to go through with it i recommend a flame TT. Harry Potter can make like come from his wand, but i think a fire would be fine.

ps. i am writing alot about illegal things lately. Maybe ill be a crook when i grow up. J/K

What I would do is advertise (not a lot just through it out there) that you do theme shows as well and use Harry Potter as ab example.

I think that there is no harm in using the names of the spells, just as long as the religion of the people or there superstitions don't appose harry potter. I myself, being a kid who is obsessed (emphasized greatly) with harry potter have come up with many tricks perfect for the use of harry's spells. one being a thread connection thingy ( I can't think of the actual term now) where a balll of paper 10 feet away rises to the ceiling and back again, and if i am feeling good, over the audience, using the spell wingardium leviosa (levioSA not leviosuh!!). Anyway, you can get a complete (or almost) list of spells with correct (or almost all) definitions -

www.darkmark.com

hope this helped (if it was meant to!)
