If you saw the video "On the Spot", Gregory Wilson gives an excellent out for when you get caught. Be honest.

First, you must do other magic, to show the people that you are a serious magician and not a hustler.

Second, only use watch steals and pickpocketting if you think that these particular people will be okay with it.

Note: never do either of these on women. If you get caught picking a woman's pocket or stealing a woman's watch, you are in for a serious beating from every guy in the vacinity (Knight In Shining Armor Syndrome). Even if you are successful, women will generally just feel violated rather than amazed.

Third, If someone catches you stealing their watch they will usually say "What are you doing?" you simply answer, "Stealing your watch." (in a matter of fact way, as though you thought nothing of it). You now quickly move into the next trick.

Alternate out: rather than diverting their attention by quickly moving into the next effect, say, "I'm trying to steal your watch, but you're not making it easy." or "I'm stealing your watch, would you like your wallet back? (note: you don't actually have their wallet.)

Extra: try this. purchase a plain black bifold leather wallet. Anytime you need a free moment of misdirection, say "Oh by the way I stole this from one of you, but I can't remember which."

Extra 2: TRY THIS: USE A WATCH STEAL AS A COVER TO PICK SOMEONE'S POCKET. LET THEM CATCH YOU STEALING THE WATCH.WHEN HEY DO, TELL THEM "WELL I WAS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR WATCH. NORMALLY I WOULD JUST DO THIS (EXPLAIN STEP BY STEP HOW YOU WOULD TAKE THIS PARTICULAR WATCH). WHILE YOU EXPLAIN, STEAL THEIR WALLET. SOMETIMES I WILL SLIP A CARD INTO THE WALLET AND USE IT AS A IMPROV CARD TO WALLET EFFECT. IT IS MUCH MORE SPECTACULAR WHEN IT IS THEIR WALLET.

DON'T DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL, OK.

SERIOUSLY.

P.S. these concepts are to be used for entertainment purposes only.

If I ever get caught pickpocketing (never :D) I just explain it was going to be a magic trick.

And what PaperFish said is right tell jokes or short funny storys to get yourself out of awkward situations.

Id say if you get caught say good you were paying attention see im a magician and im trying to show people how easy it is for people to minipulate you.
plus it always helps to have someone recording you so theyll believe you like think mabe its a tv special or something plus if your a teenager like me stay away from people who look mean and elders theyll think your a theif like "all" punk teenagers

Not what I meant. If I go up to someone on the street in England and say "I'm an entertainer" and then take their wallet; I'm going to get hit.

Wow, to say "in England" makes us seem like rough people! But lemme throw a name out there; Pete Wardell. He does a watch steal as a part of a knotted silks routine, and he shares an important point there as well, if you are pickpocketing in the street, always show your steals to the audience behing the guys back or something. All it takes is one person to call the police!

Don't worry, you guys in England don't come off as tough guys at least here in America lol.

But you do come off as way tougher than the rest of europe...
cough France especially cough lol

Ok enough pointless stereotypical jokes about countries..

Pickpocketing seems really really tough. I have tried placepocketing before, but it was really tough too, and pickpocketing seems tougher than placepocketing for sure. I think someone really should post a vid of them doing some pickpocketing to help out. I have watched one dvd and it was horrible. Basically it taught you to stick your hand in someone's pockets while doing something like checking out their jacket, or checking out whats in their pocket lol.

Or if it was a guy it taught you to grab his butt... !!???!?..... lol yeah I know right???!!!??!

Your on T.V. sir! there's cameras over there and over there!. 8) And while they're looking for the cameras RUN For the Hills

The version I like: if you get caught stealing the watch (while doing some other magic), look as though they are confused, and tell them that you're returning the watch you had taken five minutes before, without their noticing!
