I hate being told to perform too. But as always when the spectator ruins the magic for the audience have a few back ups and maybe when that spectator has left or when all is relaxed and normal again, then I hit them with the requested illusion. Use time misdirection. Wait them out.

Whenever this happens to me and I really dont want to preform, I just say that I have nothing on me. Then, if you actually want to perform some magic, you could say something along the lines of "I just rememberd that I brought my cards ect. along" HOpe this helps :wink:

As for the topic- I feel the pain. I once did a trick with a palming card effect and my family thought I was doing the trick off the bottom of the deck. Yuck.

This is what i do:

I ponder (i rub my chin with my hands) and look up at the ceiling. Then i say, "Hey!! I never thought of that! Thanks!" (but the trick is really the same way the heckler said it)...but they don't know..(They think they got it wrong by now...

Whoever said that young kids figure things out more quickly than adults is spot on.
I usually perform my new trick in front of my eight year old son... He's way quick when pointing out that one of my movements looked faked, and I learn from this to improve my method because its easier to cover up a blunder in front of an 8 year old, rather than a crowd of adults who don't blink!
I hear things like:
MAGNETS!! Invisible STRINGS, Its in the other hand, You just put that in your pocket!!!... it's better than using a mirror or video tape for learning purposes.
Also he gives constructive options that help me enhance the effects like...
Yeah, but can you do it with THIS straw?
Why do you put that glass way over there?
I didn't get to see real good if your hands were empty.
Can you do that in the other room?, or outside?

Also someone posted that, if possible, do the EFFECT another way, and sort of explain (falsely) the answer. If they see you vanish a coin one way, they'll be looking for that same method again. If you perform it using a different method right after, then their theories are out the window and you have truly baffled them
