He was a better advertiser than anything. Great with the public and the media.

But he was my original inspiration, and hero.

p.s. there are other topics already on this.

I don't think he was the best magician. He was a great advertiser (one of the main reasons he is remembered today). He was obsessed with the art. He wanted to be the best, and he strove to be so. He could be a great guy, but get on his bad side, and revenge would most likely happen.

He knew how to give the people what they wanted. He knew how to make things seem more dangerous than they are. In that respect, he was one of the greats. But many other magicians were far better then him.

But he is also one of my heros.

a magician is one that entertains with magic. Ehrich was the ultimate, father of magic. he was the master of entertaining. and i feel that if you didn't vote good (btw the should have been great) then you truly do not understand real magic.

I don't think that's quite fair. I never voted for good. Just because compared to many others, his skills were quite lacking. He didn't even label himself as a magicain. His death certificate actually labeled him as an actor.

I also think it's going a little far to call him the father of magic. That's really overlooking some of the greats.

David- I will have to check out that movie. I recently just got Houdini's book on magic (I forget the actual title), which I'm excited for.

Houdini is the greatest magician the world has ever seen and one of the greatest entertainers there has been in any genre. Sure, there have been countless magicians before and since who are more skilled at sleight of hand, more creative in their magical inventions, or more innovative in their way of thinking. But ultimately, magic isn't about how good an innovator or how skilled at sleight of hand you are. Magic is about how good an entertainer you are. Houdini could hold an audience entranced for hours. He could milk an effect for all it's worth, holding the audience at the edge of their seats. His name has become so synonimous with magic that it has made appearances in dictionaries (not encyclopedias....dictionaries).

In magic, it is the lay people that matter, because magic is ultimately about entertainment. That being the case, there is no question who the greatest magician of all time is. Short of saying Harry Potter or Merlin, no name evokes thoughts of magic as universally and as readily as Houdini.
