Throughout my 3 and a half years of magic ive learned alot. I usually show tricks to my mom. she is not afraid to critisize which is good. Just one problem. She keeps saying that my best trick is a simple little ring on string thing that i learned years ago. advise! please. :x

Say "thank you" and keep performing Ring on String.

It's really the audience that determines what works and what doesn't, regardless of your efforts in other areas. They really don't care that you spent half your life perfecting an "invisible" pass that they'll never see anyway.

Take DaveV's advice, and perform that effect. If it's your strongest effect, perform it. I still perform some of the stuff that I first learned 3 years ago, and get great reactions, because over the years I have gotten better and better at the not only the sleights involved, but the presentation, as well.

People will enjoy different magic then you enjoy. I love gambling routines, and I've worked really hard on mastering the sleights, but the majority of the people that I show it too, are more impressed by a simple ACR. So instead of performing my gambling routines, I perform the ACR, maybe throwing in some of the gambling sleights just for my enjoyment every now and again. But, the main point is doing what the audience enjoys.

Well you still have a whole lot to learn.

Simple does not mean bad. Some of the greatest effects are simple.

You will find as time goes on that the best magic is the simplest magic. I think it's because it's easy for the spectators to follow, yet they still find themselves being fooled at the same time.

Did you ask her what she liked better about it? Did she find it more amazing, or more ENTERTAINING? If the latter, it's a performance issue. Find out what you were doing right with it, and try to carry that on over to the other effects.
