1) Bring out Penguin 2.0.
2) If 2.0 still requires some work, tell us. Tell us accurately where you are with producing it and when it's expected to arrive.
3) Start the "Take My Job" contest.
4) Restore the ability to have avatars.
5) Judge the MagicHistorian logo contest.
6) Update the free tricks.
7) Add a wishlist.
8) Add advanced searching (e.g. by price, category).
9) Scrap the News forum and replace it with two separate forums: a forum especially for discussing the company (e.g. suggestions/comments, order malfunctions, news) and one for FAQs (how to add an avatar, what acronyms mean, how to access PO forums, etc.).
10) Spend more time on the forums, engaging with customers.
11) Have contests. These can be contests where the aim is to suggest an improvement to the company, and the best idea wins a gift certificate. Another internet forum has contests where the prize is a custom forum status.
12) Change the censorship from "[edited]" to something that distinguishes what the original word was. A friend said that every time someone sees "edited", he thinks of the rival magic company, because both words get changed to the same thing.
13) Close down the UK site.
14) Have a way to ensure people are aware of the rules before they can begin posting. Also, I think that Penguin should highlight what sort of questions should be asked, when they should be asked, the importance of doing your own research and searching before making a new thread, the importance of writing well in order to get good answers, etc.
15) Make sure all products in the catalogue have product descriptions. In addition to the Take My Job contest, there could also be one for writing product descriptions.
16) Don't use YouTube as a way to broadcast videos. It looks unprofessional since it's the same broadcasting method that the public uses. Revver is also pretty bad because it has advertising. Use Google Video, or go back to what you did before – normal QuickTime and Windows Media files.
17) Change the forum statuses so that they do not draw a comparison between a user's post count and how skilled they are at performing. It only promotes spamming and pointless threads.
18) Get Tarbell's Complete Course in Magic in stock.
19) Mod Wildheart.
20) Read this thread or the other nineteen points are useless.

21) Make this a sticky!

Maxwell, thank you for your thorough response.

I appreciate that time estimation is difficult, especially for new and complex projects. I'm a computer scientist myself.

It's good to see that a few items on the list have already been done. I had expected that, since they had already been suggested a while back. I look forward to seeing them when they're done. I like the "Click here to suggest an improvement to this product description" button very much.

I realise that it's a balance between doing company work and finding extra time to engage with customers, but customers frequently ask questions on the boards that require someone who actually works at Penguin to respond. By having a forum dedicated to questions about the company, Penguin staff will only need to check that one forum. It will give Penguin more of a face without meaning that staff have to browse through each and every forum looking for threads that they could contribute to, for the sake of contributing. I'm not saying that you, Acar and Jay should post on a regular basis (as you said, you may have better things to do and, in fact, it makes the times you do post more special) but I think that there should be at least one person from Penguin who frequents the boards to answer relevant questions.

I had realised that the UK warehouse had closed down, but I didn't realise the thing about the UK site and the traffic. That makes sense, but I would have expected the URLs "penguinmagic.co.uk" and "penguinmagic.com/europe" to redirect automatically to the USA site, rather than presenting an out-of-date page that says "Take advantage of our FAST FREE SHIPPING to Europe from our UK distribution center!"

I think that there should be a way of blocking certain user names from being registered, like foxuiret and funnyPicshaasdc. Also, I think that every time a bot posts spam, a mod should be able to enter that name into a database of blocked usernames.

Okay, Maxwell's response in this thread just proves that Penguin is the greatest magic website ever. It's awesome that customers and employees can engage like that and something productive always comes out of it. Can't wait for Penguin 2.0. Although, call it Penguin Deuce or something cooler. Nah, just kidding

Wow. I've never seen a company with such dedication that they will correspond with users like this. Maxwell is da man! I think it's great that Penguin 2.0 will be out soon, and that many of my favorite features from non magic sites will be implimented, such as wishlist and advanced searching. Way to go penguin!

Yeah, I know. Something's better than nothing though. We haven't seen the new version yet. Hopefully they'll have something better than that.

Darn it!I'm gone for two days and I miss Maxwell's post!

This all sounds good though, good to here from you again Maxwell.Instead of post count,a type of 'rep' should be given for being a helpful user consistantly.I use that system on 'Liverpool' site I visit and it works great. The mods would be in charge of this 'rep' of course.

I like the idea of a few people having special forum ranks, but you'll have to be careful that it doesn't lead to jealousy and unnecessary sucking up!

Something I think this forum should have is a guide to asking questions. This page, although to do with programming, contains a lot of useful advice on how not to look like an idiot when making threads. It is horrendously long, but I'd be more than willing to re-write a shorter version of it, if such a post would contribute to the forums.

It would. Even does in the business industry where adults scramble to inform the boss how great he looks. I can't imagine what kinda havoc it would bring here. IMHO of course. :)

The concept would work fine in a forum where everyone is mature and graceful towards each other; however, this is not one of those forums.

Keep the ideas coming. Maxwell and I have discussed Lawboy's email, and as a result, I will be more active in the forums whenever I can. We really do appreciate your suggestions and I'm sure you will be pleased with Penguin 2.0 when it rolls out.

Best,
