The Sherlock Holmes Inductive Book Test by Alexander Black and Troy Cherry a classic in English literature becomes a powerful weapon for hard hitting mentalism!
Price: $49.95
Out of stock.

With support and advice from Richard Osterlind, Alexander Black and Troy Cherry hit another home run with their second book test!

Here's how it works: the mentalist or magician talks about how Sherlock Holmes was one of the all-time best detectives in history.

The performer explains how this Victorian age CSI expert would use his five senses to discover clues and induce facts that would ultimately lead him to solve crimes that stumped the famous Scotland Yard and stopped them dead in their tracks.

This wonderful looking book, a classic of English literature recognized and enjoyed all over the world, is handed out for an audience member to examine. This person is chosen at random and is in no way a confederate or spontaneous stooge. It can be anyone!

This person is then asked to look through the book and tell the audience how many pages there are. With nearly 300 pages to choose from, this participant is asked to choose one at random and WITHOUT LOOKING. It is a totally free choice!

The number is then revealed to the audience and the person is applauded back to their seat. Another person is then freely chosen from the audience and asked to pick up any other book sitting on a table.

There can be one or 30 books; it doesn't matter. They can even change their mind and pick up another book. No problem! This second person is instructed to turn to the page number previously chosen at random and to being reading the page in their mind as if they were projecting it to you.

IMMEDIATELY you reveal the first word as they are getting through the first paragraph. You then being to reveal the contents of the whole first paragraph! She is instructed to continue reading in her head. But you are able to piece things together just like Sherlock Holmes but even better. You are able to tell her about the whole page! You "see" what she is reading.

Totally self contained!

ANY book can be used!

You can use as many books as you like.

The Sherlock Holmes Inductive Book test can even be done close-up (just carry a couple extra books for them to choose from). You can even use a spectator's book! No kidding.

Practical, but method may surprise you Report this review

There is some great value in this book. When I received it, I thumbed through it before reading the instructions to see if I could spot the workings. I didn't. The "trick" is well hidden.

You are not really buying a trick here, so much as buying a tool. Hobby magicians may be disappointed with this book, but those with some grounding in mentalism and the styles of presentation that go with it will work real miracles with this.

Some reviewers have said that this trick can't be done with any old book that the spectator likes. I disagree. I think that with the right handling and order of events, it is very easy to reveal a word or picture from a book that a spectator gives you. Revealing a whole paragraph might be harder.

The success you get from this book will depend on the skill with which you wield it. The instructions are basic, so be prepared to embellish with some good theatrics. I think the book itself is very safely examinable before the trick, but I wouldn't give it out afterwards.

Only four stars here because it is not entirely groundbreaking, and although I can see why it is expensive, some may see it and feel that it is overpriced.

This is a really great book test, and there are a number of different routines you can do with it. I use this all the time with my phonebook prediction routine, and it looks impossible. Here’s a video of me using this on stage (skip to 5:20 in order to see the actual book test):

This is completely self-working, and requires no memorization whatsoever. I highly recommend you pick this up; I am sure you will be able to come up with a number of possible routines you could do with this.

I liked it, very ingenious idea to seemingly read their minds. I recomend it for those who want to put just a bit of mentalism in their routine.

A little misleading Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on April 5th, 2010
The concept is really tricky, not what I expected. The description is a little misleading, as you really can't use any random book (I pretty much gathered this wasn't the case, at that would truly be a miracle if you could). Any book test is a little too pricey if you ask me. For the money, there are many other great tricks I would rather spend my money on.

Use 3 or more books Report this review

The best thing about this is that you can use as many books as you can remember the page content. Just get the Holmes book in their hands and you will amaze them. It's not just a word, it's a paragraph or picture or anything you want if you select you books carefully.

this is an alright book test, it works in some cases... HOWEVER it lost two stars because you CANNOT do it with any book, although it is advertised to make it seem like a spectator could just give you a random book and you'll be able to do it... Thats the reason i bought it, if your buying it for that reason, buy the dracula book test because once again you cannot use a random book given to you on the spot.

I like this. It's worth the money, works with any book and is very difficult to figure out if performed correctly. If you're into book tests (and I am) I think you'll like this one.

first of all I must say that this book test is very good. There is a very subtle and easy method to execute this book test but you would never guess that. If you are a beginner in mentalism and are wondering if this is worth the money and if you will be able to achieve the effect. Look no further cause this is for you. If you are an expert mentalist and are looking for something to add to your act. Look no further! This book test is strong enough to be a closer. I mean look at the pros, uses audience participation, easy method, ends pretty clean (I mean they don't even think checking Sherlock Holmes because you barely use it in the efect), killer, powerful, amazing effect. Something your audience will never forget. The only con is you can't perform this trick more then once to the same person. But hey! Do you ussually perform an effect more then once for the same person anyway? I performed this effect do today at least 4 times and I left all the spectators with their jaw hanging opening dumbfounded (even a teacher). All of the spectators also immediately considered me pro. Definetly a reputation maker.
So if you are looking for a book test with all these features and want to become known. Get this now. I know you are thinking is it worth it though. I mean 50 dollars I can by a bunch of other effects for that much. Well let me tell you it is worth every penny. And let me also say I will have this one in my act for years to come. Buy it. You won't regret.
