This is my little review for the singularity, by Alvo Stockman (obviously)
So my initial thoughts on this DVD were a little iffy, as were almost everybody's. The Demo really shows nothing, the product page is a little skippy, and it wasn't advertised as much as I thought it would. I remember hearing all the hype on the forums and everywhere else over it, and in the end I had to just trust my fellow Magicians on this one.
There are 2 demos up. One of which really is just a teaser, and the 2nd is an actual performance speed performance of the actual effect. I think the reason to show almost nothing is because there really is NOTHING to see. The most physical thing you do in the routine is just spreading the deck. That's almost all the action required, and it just looks SO clean! There's nothing more to be said on that
Now for the teaching. I have a few of Alvo's books and some of his downloads. I personally love his teaching style. He slips a few "uhhs.." and "aaaaands.." every now and then but it's really well thought out and nothing distracts the learning. Keep in mind though, that this is a VERY difficult effect to do.
The bonus section was amazing. It had pretty much nothing to do with the actual singularity effect, but Michael Weber is AWESOME. He goes through a really cool mindreading routine in full detail with Alvo. That runs for almost an hour. Plus, afterwards, Alvo goes back to the studio to teach some bonus clever ideas. PLUS, after that he has a full practice session with a really nice instrumental score.
Overall, I would rate this DVD a 4/5. It seems like the packaging and "inside" work lacked something I can't pick apart. And it's VERY difficult to perform and it's not advertised as so. SO there it is. Nice work!

the invisible deck is one one of the most used effects in both close up and parlor magic. if your like me and dont like carrying around gimmicks then singularity is perfect for you. as you should know, its a non gimmicked version of the invisible deck. your not going to pick up the move in one sitting. its like learning the pass. takes you a while to get the move down, takes you more time to get it perfect fifty percent of the time, then takes you even more time to get it perfect one hundred percent of the time. people are going to catch you when you first start. thats all i can say. if you have the patience to learn the pass, then get singularity. if you dont want to carry round gimmicks with you, get singularity. if you want an amazing trick thats totally practical, get singularity.

The invisible deck is arguably (definitely imho) the BEST effect you can do with a "deck of cards". Spectator freely names ANY card in the deck and magician spreads cards to show ONE card facing opposite--their freely named card!
Because I'm a purist, I could never perform this effect for personal reasons. I refuse to use a gimmick deck. I'd hate to have to come up with a witty statement that basically says "I only use magic cards" when someone with cards asks me to show him something.
I'm so grateful that Alvo released this and I cannot express enough how great this effect is.
WARNING! This is not self working--you will need to practice this over and over because the sleight is done while under fire. If you have the dedication to learn to pass a deck, then learning this trick won't be hard.
AMAZING! Singularity's value far exceeds the price and time required to master. This IS the impromptu, no setup, no gimmicks, no bullshit version of the Invisible Deck. Start and end clean. PERFECT!
Too many 'what ifs' and sloppy teaching Report this review

Invisible Deck is a classic. The fact that it is gimmicked is not a problem because the specs are blown out of their minds they dont think to check the deck. Singularity is the ungimmicked version and if you practise enough, you will get this effect and it will truly be a great effect to do in your shows.
[edited to protect secret]
his teaching is great but it is all over the place. he uses these words a lot: "ok so i should explain that before you do xyz, you need to do abc" He has already discussed xyz in length before discussing abc!
Nice trick - too many what ifs and sloppy teaching.
Nice memory trick at the end tho
Great thinking Report this review

Alvo is known for his fantastic thinking in magic. This is no exception. The Invisible deck has often been muddled down with improvements but this is the cherry on top. It is not something you will pick up in a day but it does give you the best out in every situation.
The secret effect at the end totally fried me. Worth the price of the DVD.

I was probably one of the first people to receive this item in the mail and I've watched it twice since I've gotten it. Honestly, I was hesitant to put up any sort of feedback for this because it's just so good I'd rather keep it to myself. But, I've been reading a few message boards and people have been very suspicious of the demo and I thought I would clear a few things up.
You see demo #2 on the product page? That is exactly how it looks like in performance. That is the "start" and the "end" of the effect. It is not a "pick a card first and then it becomes reversed" effect. It's the exact effect of the traditional Invisible Deck. A person names a card, the deck is spread, and the only reversed card in the deck is their named card.
There were suspicions that the second demo only showed the end of the effect and there were multiple steps before that. Let me be perfectly clear: the reversed card could have been any card. Alvo actually does the sleight in that video, the card is not reversed from the start. The fact that people are assuming there are additional phases or the video has been specifically cut is testament enough to show just how clean Singularity is.
Move monkeys will love this effect. It's pure sleight of hand. The Singularity is very doable, but it's going to take a decent amount of practice. You'll also have to watch your angles, but Alvo covers this very well in the video and it's much less angle sensitive than a lot of the Buck Twin's stuff.
This is perfect for walk-around magic and overall one of the purest effects you can do with a deck of cards. I give this effect a 5/5.
Singularity is the Real Deal Report this review

Received the Singularity DVD 2 days ago (pre-ordered). Simply put, it makes the gimmicked Invisible Deck (which I have always enjoyed) obsolete. After about 3 hours of practice, it's now second nature (and I'm new to magic, but not to performance). The bonus effect itself is worth the price of admission.
You knocked it out of the park again, Alvo.

The idea of this effect is absolute great and everything really is impromptu. The reason that I give this effect 2 stars is because of the price!!!!! This trick is WAY overpriced!! The dvd doesn't even come in a regular dvd case!! It is in a sleeve. To learn just one trick, and only one move, is way too much. Cmon Penguin

I recently finished the DVD and I just want to say how impressive the structure of this trick. Singularity and ID are equal in terms of visual presentation (spreading the cards to find the thought card face-down) and time elapsed to complete the trick. Those who do not like to carry a gimmick deck just to perform ID should learn this. Great stuff Alvo!
Unimaginably Excellent! Report this review

I did not pre-order this effect but rather ordered it after it had been released a while and had to wait for it to be shipped. Now I'm thinking about how much I wish I had had it for my last gig!
I was very suspicious of the demo video, as I like many other magicians had seen many, many, MANY versions of the "normal-deck-invisible-deck." However, I was very surprised to find the method to this great effect! It really does look as good as the description says.
I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I am constantly learning methods and either forgetting them or majorly restructuring them. I do not have to do this with Singularity... it is undoubtedly the most perfect effect I've purchased in a long, long, LONG time.
On the whole, if you perform the Invisible Deck but hate having to carry it around with you all the time, BUY THIS NOW! The amount of detail that Alvo presents in the DVD is phenomenal and the effect is practical, affordable (a steal, in fact), and 100% IMPROMPTU!
I will concede that it will take a massive amount of practice to perform it well, but this effect is completely worth it. The Invisible Deck I've had for so long will no longer be sitting in my tickle trunk unused, but instead it will be in the garbage. I'm convinced that Singularity, once mastered, will completely replace it.
In fact, I'm almost tempted to call this effect NOT Singularity, but The Invisible Deck. It really is that excellent.
