This is a trick I used to do for years! It really is a good trick, but its one of those that you can either do really good, or really bad, depending on how serious you are about presenting the effect well.
This is not a self-worker, but the sleight of hand needed isn't terribly difficult. That is PRECISELY the reason why I've seen this performed so poorly many times. Just because something isn't difficult doesn't mean it isn't difficult to execute well. If you want this effect to be entertaining and fun for your audiences, you are going to need to put some real work into presenting it well. Keep in mind that it is an unnatural object, so magicians performing this start at a disadvantage from the get-go. You have to work to overcome the disadvantage and entertain your audiences early.
Overall it's a great effect, but it's not a jaw-dropper by any means. If you work at it, it can be a fun and entertaining effect that you will enjoy doing for quite awhile.

Hot Rod, a classic. This is a decent effect, that I like because it works well with spectators of all ages. I also like it because you can have it with you all the time...what you see it what you get, a hot rod, so it's small and easy to carry around. The trick is easy to learn, and in a short time very easy to perform. You'll want to practice this one regularly, not because it's at all difficult, but because this effect is one that looks extraordinarily better when performed well. This is a neat effect, and an investment that will last you a lifetime.

Its easy to perform, carries anywhere, and people are baffled when they see the colors change right before their eyes.
I am an amateur, and was doing it like a pro in about 5 minutes.

It's a classic, it's an easy, visual change into their chosen color. It's kinda inspectable, but the brass hot rod is fully examinable and has two change colors.

I think that this is a good trick. I especially like how small it is (makes it easy to carry around). The only problem is that 1/3 the time I perform this trick, one of my spectators figures out how I do the change, but is baffled how it works when other colors are selected. So, overall this is a good trick, but with a lot of practice, the trick can look very natural and will achieve big reactions!

The hot rod gets a great reaction from spectators and you will always have someone asking you to do it again. It works best if you master the moves and work out some good patter before taking it public. Nobody I've performed it for has discovered the secret, but you have to be prepared to lie like crazy if they do.

The effect is wonderful. It's easy to learn. If you've never done magic it might take you an hour or so to get it down pat, but I'd say buy this, it's worth it.

Yes this is an easy trick to perform, but it's also an easy trick for the spectators to figure out if your moves aren't great. 30 mins. prep time. You can't let them see the hot rod. It's worth the money, but when you get it you'll laugh at the secret gimmick. Be very good at lying if they figure it out. But no matter how simple it is, it works well if your acting skills are good. So give it a try and buy it. See ya 4 stars
