pretty disappointing... Report this review

I love penguin magic and have spent hundreds of dollars here, maybe thousands over the past decade or so... And I have never been more disappointed! Don't get me wrong, it's an unbelievable illusion, obviously, just watch the video... but unfortunately the coin is 100% NOT examinable. Scotch and Soda can be closely examined because the manufacturing of it is perfect.... this gimmick is so noticable, that when my wife was opening the package while in the car because I was driving, as soon as she opened the box she immediately said "oh, you're going to hate this" and it was STILL IN THE PLASTIC BAG! She could see how poorly the gimmick fit together through the zip lock bag.
Of course the DVD teaches you ways to divert the spectators' attention.
Does Penguin take returns? I've never had to return something, but this time I do

First, I want to say I was very excited about this when I bought it. I LOVE scotch and soda and use it all the time. I have a routine where I use three sets, and hand the coins out several times. I was hoping to be able to do the routine with regular coins. However, this can not happen. I do magic mainly for adults. They really like to handle the items I use. There is no way I would hand out this coin. The idea for the coin was a good one. Not needing a bang ring... wow! However, the inside "gimmick" moves around too much. I think I would have like the one before this one better. I will try this and see how it goes, but I would not feel comfortable handing it out.

I see that a few people are concerned about being able to hand out the quarter. If the trick is done well, there is no need to hand out the quarter. I have done the old S&S hundreds of times and have never felt the need to hand out the gimmick. What the spectators are concerned about is the coin that changed in their hand.
If you want to hand out the quarter, a simple Bobo will take care of that. The lack of need for a bang ring and the "normal" change is, for my money, a great improvement.

I love this trick! It's a great update to the classic Scotch and Soda.
I think the other reviewers who didn't love this didn't actually go perform it yet. Scotch and Soda HAS to be examinable with a fine-tooth comb because people want to check out a half dollar and an English penny. Not the case with this.
I've performed this a few times now, and people don't want to examine the gimmick at all because in their mind it's just a normal quarter. OK, sure, if all you do is make the penny disappear right in front of their eyes and nothing else, they'll want to examine it.
But if you change the penny into a dime, or make it appear in an impossible location, or do any of the other routines on the DVD, a real spectator could care less about looking at your quarter.
The craftsmanship on my gimmick is great, and I have no problems handing it to a spectator. I did have the original Captain & Coke, and this 2.0 version is MUCH better. As long as you don't say "Please examine this quarter very closely", which would be stupid, they'll never catch it in a million years. Because of the way this gimmick is made, you can see a very faint line where "the work" has been done to the coin. But we as magicians know what we're looking at, while the audience does not.
Quality gimmick, regular common coins, and nice routines with clear teaching. Highly recommended!

no bang ring, very cool, uses coins people are used to, very cool, dont gotta squeeze it into place so much, very cool, the cons are the quarter is not examinable, i would just give it a switch at the end, and i found i also gotta toss the quarter around a bit after cuz if they stare or get a decent glance at the back they can see the lines, better to do in a dimmer lighting because of that, i thought the lines would be better hidden but if you like scotch n soda buy it, i can see myself carrying this everywhere and performing it despite its flaws

This trick is very good and gets great reactions. The thing is if you let someone see it just a bit they might figure it out because the gimmick doesn't completely look like a quarter at the end of the routine. I would stick to scotch and soda but i guess since this trick uses common coins it could be a little more organic. the DVD is very well made and the gimmick comes in a nice baggy. I gave this trick a four because it is really good and there are many cool coin tricks you can preform and its also a classic. It's not completely perfect and the gimmick could of been made better because you can feel and hear that it isn't a normal quarter when you hold it and drop it on a table. Overall good but not the best. I'd say if you have the money get it!

The new magnetic Captain and Coke is almost effortless
and mistake proof in accomplishing it's task even when
done in a spectator's hand. I will say though, it
wouldn't stand up to much inspection in good light but
I think it's worth having and doing.
Just have a penny
and another quarter ready in a jeans or other pocket so that when they ask: "where did it go?". as you take the gimmick out of their hand you can place it in your pocket, and leave it there, as you pull another real quarter and penny out and ask: "Did you catch when I did that?" You can then let them examine both real coins.
Not everyone would notice the __________ because I wouldn't say it was obvious...and even in good light if someone sees the "difference" they most likely wouldn't process it unless they were a magician or worked for the IRS :)
Still, I probably will never hand it out after the trick is done although I'm very confident with placing everything in someone's hand to begin with. Very well engineered and should last through at least hundredsof uses, probably many more than that.
I like the tighter fit and less noticable (usually not noticeabl at all) components of the "flipper" better but this is a differnt engineering task and, for what it is, it is done very very well and worth having I think.
Its Good BUT... Report this review

The Props are Well Made. The Routines are VERY good (Triple Play Especially). The DVD is well Made BUT the Gimmick is NOT Examinable. Actually if the light its TOO bright the spectator can see CLEARLY where the Gimmick is.
Here is the tipical case in when you have to sacrifice one thing in order to obtain another...Let me explain:
SCOTCH & SODA
A Half Dollar its not common anymore, and a Mexican Centavo...Actually Mexican Friends have NO idea of what a Mexican Centavo is.The props dont look natural, and if you add to this that a "Bang Ring" is not a dream for a reset you can find several disadvantages on a Regular Scotch and Soda. The PRO here is that a WELL made Scotch and Soda can be handled by a spectator and don't get a clue of how this works.
CAPTAIN AND COKE
A Quarter and a Penny is something that EVERYBODY has today. So the props look Natural. No Bang Ring required so this is an INSTANT reset, perfect for restaurant workers. The DISADVANTAGE: The Gimmick can't be hand out (Actually Look Carefully) to an spectator. You need to execute sleight of hand in order to give the coin for examination. If you look the quarter you CAN SEE some suspicious stuff. And ALSO a Quarter is a lot more easy to lose than a Half Dollar.
SOOOOOO...if you don't want to do sleight of hand and wants to hand out the gimmick, this is NOT for you. If you don't mind to make a simple shuttle pass and handout the quarter or simple perform the effect and never handle the quarter to someone, and you like NORMAL, ORDINARY,ORGANICAL looking props, with easy set up and a well made gimmick, THIS IS FOR YOU !
