People Skills by Matt Mello (Instant Download) One of the largest impromptu demonstrations you will ever learn!
Price: $5.00
In stock: Download INSTANTLY.

People Skills is a demonstration in which you predict the decisions a person will make on a crowd of people. Your main participant openly chooses if people will go to the left side of the stage, the right side of the stage, or if they will be sent back to their seats. The performer is in no way involved in the decision making process. When everyone has been sent somewhere by the spectator, you're able to show a prediction that proves you knew every action they would make!

This is the largest demonstration that Matt performs, and also happens to be one of the easiest! All that's needed is to give the person the instructions to select people, and then you can sit back and relax and do NOTHING; the method is completely self-working. At the end, without you needing to do or switch anything, they remove the prediction from their pocket and find that you're correct...ALWAYS!

People Skills is primarily a stage effect, but can also be used at parties or in school, sending people to either side of the room or to sit down. There is no limit on how many people can be included in the game, so it's the perfect piece to get a ton of audience members involved with the show. It typically uses about fourteen people, but if you're Derren Brown, you could fill a room with a hundred people and could still predict the outcome of the person's decisions!

Very interesting concept… but it feels to me as "work-in-progress"… It needs further development.

I am willing to bet that there is nobody regularly performing this trick in this form (feel free to comment to prove me wrong. I'm sure that no one will). Although Matt mentioned that he has a better version of this trick in his book, that is not the version I received when I purchased this, and is not the version you will receive either when you purchase it.
Basically what Matt did is he took a well known card trick and went "Hey, this would work with people on stage!"
Without giving away the name of the trick (which is basically all you need. If you knew the name of the trick there would be no reason to purchase the trick) although it is half decent, and worth remembering and performing once in a while (I've performed it 3 or 4 times myself), its not really all that strong comparatively. You would never do a trick like this on stage. The buildup requires about 30 people to be deceiving, fills the whole stage and takes about 10 minutes. Its so big it probably has to be your finale. The problem is that then your final prediction is then going to be super underwhelming. The more the buildup, the greater the payoff has to be. I can't tell you what the payoff is as ten you'd know what trick it is, but to put it lightly, you are NOT going to "show a prediction that proves you knew every action they would make."
This is essentially equivalent to making you grand finale that you spent 10 minutes building up guessing what number on a dice someone would roll. Half decent trick, worth about two minutes of buildup. But if that is your big finale I really don't want to watch the rest of your show.
Also, you want your final effect to be something totaly bewildering that will leave your audience thinking about it for months. This effect takes about 10-20 minutes to backtrack. For the card version no one is going to bother. However, if its your finale, someone in every car will have it figured out by the end of their ride home.

I just left another review and I forgot to write why I wouldn't use it. Don't know if penguin can combine them.

This effect plays so big it pretty much has to be a closer or at least lead in to the closer. The problem is it isn't nearly as strong as you'd want a closer to be. You want the closer to be an absolute miracle that people will talk about for years. As nice of a trick as it is, it's barely even strong enough to call a level. There's a lot of procedure for what ends up being a mediocre effect. Magically this is the equivalent of having someone take 10 minutes of procedure (multiply your number by seven, subtract three, decide by twelve...) and then showing you predicted their one digit number. Impressive and a fooler (if you don't have them subtract their number) but not good enough to be a closer by a long shot.
Also, were people to try to remember it for days someone could reverse engineer it without too much difficulty. This is the effect you want them to enjoy and then sort of forgot about.

Never would've bought this if I would've actually seen a proper product description. The description says nothing useful. That should've been a red flag except I saw some reviews written by people who were very excited. This totally doesn't fit my style (although it may fit yours) and calling this his own idea is approximately equivalent to my calling a false transfer with a piece of Lego my own idea. Nothing new (of any value) was added to the effect except using people instead of cards.
Price is fair though and someone who would use this will be very happy. I just wish I would've seen a proper product description first so I would've known it has no place in my show. I am worshipping it to see if I can make it fit. We'll see. So far I don't have very high hopes but I'm trying.

A new spin on an old method Report this review

Use this with people, cards, coins, objects, numbers, basically anything! The technique is not new, but that's not to say that it's outdated. Matt uses a technique usually found in another realm of magic and beautifully incorporates it into impromptu mentalism as found here. I love how versatile this trick is and how the method can be used to demonstrate the powerfulness of this effect to one person or hundreds.

I would challenge magicians to use a larger number of individuals than initially suggested; Matt does mention how performers like Derren Brown could use this and I am much more inclined to follow that suggestion, but maybe not such on a large scale. Keeping it in the twenties or thirties seems like a solid place to be (you'll know what I'm talking about once you read through the PDF).

Using small objects works really well and if you're really anxious about the method being discovered, which trust me there's a 99.999% it won't be, using M&Ms to quickly get rid of the evidence would be my suggestion.

Out of the Box Report this review

What Matt continues to do is re-engineer old methods and infuse them into modern routines, which is why he has become such an inspiration to many. 'People Skills' is a take on a well-known mathematical method that doesn't require any math skills at all. Matt presents the method as the smallest piece of the performance and emphasizes what you do with the method as the real gold. This opens so many doors to the creative mentalist that can be done in close up or on stage as Matt has done. Though this method is most commonly known to artists in the card trick world, Matt has transformed the effect to using people instead of cards, literally taking the idea, and even more so thinking, out side the box!
