Published by Theory and Art of Magic Press

From the beginning of his illustrious career, Eugene Burger has demonstrated that performing magic is different from presenting a trick or a puzzle. It requires that we genuinely astonish people with an experience of the impossible.

But how can we learn to perform magic that meets this high standard? Who can teach us how to do so? In this book for students and teachers of magic, master magician Eugene Burger explores the path for learning how to perform magic that has exceptional impact on our audiences.

Includes: 7 previously unpublished routines and access to videos of Eugene performing 5 of the routines.

Hardcover: 6" x 9", 182 pages

Note from Lawrence Hass, September 23, 2017:

In early 2017, Eugene Burger and I started working intensely on this book, Teaching Magic. It was sent off to the printer before the diagnosis of his terminal illness, and so it is untouched by awareness of his death, which occurred on August 8, 2017. This book is an extraordinary, poignant testament to an important part of Eugene's legacy.

WHAT MASTER MAGICIANS ARE SAYING ABOUT TEACHING MAGIC:

"His new book, Teaching Magic: A Book for Students and Teachers of the Art, once again reveals why Eugene Burger is one of our most important Magical Artists."
- Lance Burton

"One of magic's truly great teachers shares his ideas about learning, and the result is a rare case of introspective generosity. Prepare to engage!"
- Max Maven

"Thank you, Eugene! Thank you for your shared wisdom and also for always showing us, complete and alive, the thread of Magic Illusion!"
- Juan Tamariz

I remember the first time that I heard Eugene lecture. in the mid 80s. It was a mystical experience. He was so different from every other lecturer I had heard. He pushed the attendees to think about their magic in ways that no one else I had ever heard did.
He was always very kind, without being disingenuous. He and I worked a small convention together and he spoke very highly of my act, while still offering some great advice. I have made it a point to get everything that I could of his.
It is rare for a magic book to bring a tear, yet Mac King's introduction did just that. We are all sad at the loss of a great thinker, but happy that we can "visit" one more time with "the bearded one." There is real magic in these pages. Not the latest toy or contraption, but real magic. You don't often find that, yet from Eugene it was his life's work.
Buy this book, read this book, think about this book, then read it again. It will pay rich dividends not just in Magic, but in life. Then buy everything else that Eugene did (two Penguin lectures). We miss you Eugene, but we thank you for all you did for the art, for our lives, and for those spectators who, when seeing you, saw what magic could really be like.

I'm going to start off with the reason that I removed a star. It's not a HUGE reason, but it may be significant to some, and I feel it is my duty as a student of the craft to provide an honest review of what I read. I removed a single star simply because the book's title, "Teaching Magic" might be perceived as a slight misnomer. There are no real STEPS provided (a sort of curriculum, if you will). Instead, the book focuses mainly on making you a better student and a more efficient and understanding teacher and mentor. There are also a few minor spelling errors.

Now on to the rest!

"Teaching Magic" is chock full of advice and theory that will give you a far more heightened sense of how you should be perceiving your performances and their effect on your audiences. I really like how the theme of the book shifts between varying subjects (theory, effects, Q&A, etc.) so that your attention never strays from what is important and relevant. Eugene was one of the greatest magicians I ever met, but also one of the greatest people, and Larry Hass did a fantastic job with letting the book reflect that appropriately.

Highly recommended!

Ok..

I own probably a hundred Magic Books and this is definitely top 10 for me, maybe top 5. Eugene is a master performer and more importantly thinker in magic. This book is so cleverly laid out.. there is philosophy, great magic tricks and great stories. The book moves from theory to stories to how to do some great tricks. So I found reading this book to be pure joy. It didn't get boring because as soon as you are burnt our on philosophy they switch gears and start teaching tricks for example. Lots of variety and QUALITY content here.

You cannot go wrong, buy this book now! It will change your magic. And when people ask me what my top magic books of all time would be, this will remain on the list for some time.
