Better as magic than as comedy Report this review

This is comedy magic that has more emphasis on magic than the comedy. There are some tricks reveal their methods for a laugh, some that are "sucker tricks" in the Die Box style, and some that are pretty weird.

Mind Reading Deluxe is a unique routine that Dan Harlan is able to give great tips on, since he's obviously performed its tricks a lot.

Chameleon Socks has been changed and does not use the "self-tying shoelaces" method. It's quite creative, and a decent moment of magic, too. I suppose the comedy is in its silliness.

The Lie Detector includes a simple coin bend that I liked more than the main trick.

For the most part the routines are funny, some more groaners than guffaws, but all were updated and performed great by Dan. One personal point, on coins across the political diatribe used for the humor would have ended with a religious experience. A lot of laying on of hands and many chances for the magician to turn the other cheek. It did bring home to me that you do need to be sure of your whole audience before you choose your material.

As another reviewer said, this lesson is better for magic than comedy (which was just fine for me). There are a number of new pointers and touches that Dan gives, which make the lesson worth it. But the reason that I gave it five stars was the coin lie detector routine. As the description is vague, I just have to say that I will take much of that second phase and add to my halloween show (now that's a surprise for a comedy lesson).

Some ideas here, but I feel that this lesson is not too strong on magic nor comedy. Kinda halfway on both.

The Lie Detector routine was by far the best routine in this lesson.

Good but not great Report this review

First of all I have to agree with most of the rest reviews. This is not the funniest of routines, but they have a big potential for comedy if you invest some time on them.

The routines:

1)Vice Versa Rabbit mystery... I find the handling very fishy and telegraphing the method to the audience

2)Lie detector...This is a nice routine with a huge potential for comedy. I don't see myself performing this one because the props are very demanding to build. If you are good with constructing props you will enjoy this one.

3)Taveling coins...For me this is the greatest routine of the lesson. Easy to do and gets lots of laufhs.

4)Chameleon socks...This is a quicky. Interesting and clever

5)Mind reading Deluxe...In my humble opinion I don't see this working out "in the real world". I took some ideas out of this that I can incorporate in my existing meterial.

6)The last 3 gags are very funny. They are real comedy. I would not recomend using them all together as seen on the lesson but as an introduction to a magicaly strong routine.
