"David is all at once disarming and devious. He will have you laughing all the way to astonishment. Don't let the goofy exterior fool you, let the magic do that." - Aaron DeLong

"David McCreary does the kind of comedy magic I love. HIs touches on his stage act are gold for anyone who wants to take their show from good, past great, to incredible." - Erik Tait

What will he teach?

OPENER – This is David’s comedic prediction opener. It sets the tone for what the rest of the show is going to feel like. It includes 3 random predictions written out on a dry erase board. Two and a half of them aren’t great, but they are laugh out loud funny. The final half of the last prediction let’s the audience know, that not only am I going to make you laugh tonight, I’m also going to fool you with my prestig pressdije
presdigatation magic tricks.

SPONGE BALL MONTE – This is, by far, David’s favorite trick to perform for people. It’s his version of the shell game used with sponge balls. Inspired by a throw away gag that David Williamson did in his Sleight of Dave video, this bit engages not only the volunteer on stage, but drives the audience crazy. This is a trick that gets funnier for repeat audiences. You can repeat this trick over and over for the same audience and, as long as your volunteer hasn’t seen the trick, it gets more and more entertaining.

SHREDDER – David borrows the largest bill in the room and has a spectator place the bill into an envelope. That envelope is then mixed with four other identical envelopes. David then works with the poor sucker who just offered up his money to eliminate (shred) four of the envelopes, hoping that the money isn’t in an envelope that’s being shredded. It’s funny to see how much an audience enjoys seeing somebody else in fear of losing their hard earned cash.

SLEIGHT OF MOUTH – David has turned the simple “card found in mouth trick” into a great bit using two audience members. So many laughs throughout this bit, including the biggest gasp/shock/”is he really doing what I think he’s doing to that person” of the show.

BONUS:

SILENT OPENER - David walks onto stage with a giant plastic smile in his mouth. Through cue cards, David communicates with an audience member, getting her to name ANY CARD. When she names the card, David sets aside the cue cards and slowly let's the plastic smile fall from his mouth. Attached to the back side of the smile, held in his mouth, from the beginning of the effect, is a folded up card, the named card. This is David's work based on his experience with Jon Allen's Silent Treatment and Angelo Carbone's Cue The Magic.

Who is he?

David McCreary has been an entertainer for nearly 30 years. His work ranges from motivational speaker to performing stand-up comedy and magic at corporate events across the country to hosting both national and regional television shows. He’s even stepped in a few times to fill in for Dan Harlan as host of the Penguin Live lectures. After 30 years of this kind of work, David’s gotten pretty good at it. Blah, blah, blah.

Hey guys, this is David. Look, I freaking hate writing out bios about myself. It’s just weird to me. Truth is, a lot of you (most, probably) have no idea who I am, and that’s cool. I’m just honored to get the chance to share with you the 30+ minute act I’ve done for the last 20 years. It’s grown and changed and gotten funnier over the years, so I’m excited to show you where it is now. This is an act that will, without a doubt, absolutely kill. Technically, it’s not tough at all, but man does it entertain a crowd. This act is just as much fun for me as it is to the audience seeing it for the first time. My goal is to get the audience laughing just as much as they’re being fooled. I think I’ve gotten there.

Not sure if I’m allowed to do this, but wanted to try.

Thank you, to all of you, for the reviews and kind words. I cannot express how much I appreciate it. Seriously. I did not expect this kind of response. I am blown away.

I’ve had many of you reach out to me through social media to ask questions or just to friend me. Please, if you have thoughts or questions, feel free to reach out any time.

Also, yes, I gave myself 5 stars, but I swear that’s only because you have to rate the lecture to get this to post. I promise.

Great lecture Report this review

I have watched over 100 lectures from Penguin. This is in my top five and maybe top three (with Williamson and Mullica). This is great entertainment and David's willingness to share it with us was a gift.
You cannot go wrong getting this, even if you don't do comedy. Simply seeing how David thinks and makes great pieces out of small props and his sense of having fun is infectious. The entire audience seemed like they were on a wild ride and were thrilled by the end of it.

This is gold for any performer. Bypass it at your own peril.

HILARIOUS Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on December 30th, 2018
While I was watching the performance of the act I was laughing like crazy. This guy is hilarious. Buying this download is worth it just for that.

But comedy was not the only thing I got form this act. He shared a lot of ideas, interesting routines and a ton of gags you can use to spice up your act.

Most of his material has to be reworked to suit your own character if you choose to use it, because his presentation is hilarious but is also "designed" for his over the top "persona"

The highlight of the act (for me) is his silent opener. I will be using this!

Funny & Amazing Report this review

Wow! Funny and original stand-up comedy magic. A delightful show.

But be warned: 90% of the effectiveness & impact of this act is David McCreary's personality, stage presence and quick wit. You can't learn that part from any lecture.

That said, I'd love to see him live one of these days. A real delight.

Not magical or fooling Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on March 15th, 2021
I'm baffled by the great reviews. The tricks are not fooling, but *worse*- the explanations are haphazard, with few details offered. McCreary seems to take it for granted that anyone watching will already know exactly what he's done; he begins the lecture admitting that nothing he does will fool magicians. But even so- if he's not offering insights, what's the point? (Just one example- the last piece is a card trick combined with an escape- he does not demonstrate the escape. It's barely mentioned).

(I've only bought two lectures, so I can just compare this to Marc Paul, who explains every aspect of every trick in perfect detail).

The two card tricks are a shrug, the sponge ball monte is more of a gag, and an audience would have to be brain dead to be fooled by "shredder." I think it's fair to say what happens in full view of the audience- a slip of paper is removed from the secretly chosen envelope, which McCreary takes and stares at. (He has bad eyes, he says later).

I think the best piece is actually the Silent Opener, which is not part of the official act, but shown as a clip from a different event. If you wish, he will email you a follow up video on the construction of this trick. (That's nice but I don't understand why Penguin wouldn't simply include it with the download).

I held off writing this review because David McCreary comes across as a friendly guy who loves what he does- but that's not enough to recommend this lecture.

This lecture was fun and funny, sponge -ball monte alone is worth the price of the download, gags galore in this one , glue-gag ,3rd hand gag ,running balloon gag, high energy and enthusiasm, Mccreary is an entertainer, in my opinion ,one of the best,He keeps things moving ,and there was the element of surprise at every turn!!!Ego and pride was not a part of his show, He was audience-centered and not self-centered, a must to be an excellent entertainer !!!

Funny, brilliant, and just plain fun! Report this review

There is so much for a comedy magician to enjoy here. The bits of business, the interaction with the audience, the infectious energy and the just plain fun that David brings to his show is SO great.

This was well worth the investment. The show was full of tried and true routines. Absolutely no “testing testing 1, 2, 3” stuff that you sometimes get from a video. And he did a great job with the teaching portion as well.

Highly recommend.
