The Very Odd Card

Transpositions, turn-overs, and even vanishes. Odd indeed!

From the mind of master magician Martin Lewis, comes this great comedy gambling routine:

Four cards, shown front and back, are seen to consist of three duplicate odd value cards and one that is of even value and of a contrasting color. For this description we will assume they are three Three of Spades and one Ten of Diamonds.

Three separate effects take place. First is a transposition of a discarded Three of Spades with the Ten of Diamonds. Then the Ten magically turns itself over in the packet. Finally, the Ten of Diamonds vanishes completely, leaving in its place another odd card -- but this is a very odd one, because it consists of a card with five large variously colored pips!

A variation could be that this final card is yet another Three of Spades, or even the Joker. This is the way Martin did it, but I personally preferred the shock of the totally unexpected 'odd card' and the opportunity to use the line,'They are really all odd cards, especially this one!'

i really enjoy this packet trick, although the packet is suspicious that you even have one it plays bigger than expected. people really enjoy the end and this has you on a wild short ride with your spectators. Here is why i gave it three stars.. when your walking around with packet tricks, certain traits of the props could be more difficult to operate such as certain sleights. this is also a very random thing to do to someone because they cant examine the packet after which just says those are gimmicks. overall great especially that its great when you shorten the patter. check out queens out of control too, thats worth the money but i like these both

This is a great routine based on an old idea. This idea has been used in other montes but not in a routine like this. If you are looking for a trick that will get you great reactions, three card (or four card) monte routines will always do it. The thing that makes this monte stand out from others is the ending. During the routine, only 4 cards are seen. They are clearly shown to be 3 3s and the 10. This is why the ending is so stunning. Some people might not care for the trick but usually people are pretty baffled. This is a great little packet trick.

I love this trick. It's a fun trick to perform that always gets great reactions. However, the cards are not examinable unless you do a "card switch". I was also disapointed by the quality of the cards. The Hoyle gaffed or "odd" card provided has a faded blue back which does not match the rest of the cards. To remedy this, I switched all the cards to Bicycle cards and used my own gaffed cards. I also didn't care for the written instructions provided as the patter sounds dorky. In contrast, OZ as usual, does a great job explaining the trick and even throws in a free bonus, the finger spin/twhirl. Despite some of the negatives I mentioned, the positives far outweigh the negatives...and so I'm giving this trick the highest stars!!!
