Edward Marlo was one of the most influential magicians in 20th century card magic. These DVDs, which were shot in 1982, represent Marlo at his prime on broadcast quality video. This is an incredible opportunity to watch him demonstrate and explain some of his favorite routines and techniques.

Volume One: The Cardician

The DVD begins with a short documentary hosted by Dan Korem about Edward Marlo and the famed Schulien's where Marlo used to hold court. The documentary features Charlie Schulien, David Solomon, Danny Korem, and Jack Pyle. This program was originally released in 1982 and was the first video footage of Marlo to be made available. It was shot using broadcast quality equipment and is still considered the finest quality footage of the master in action. This DVD offers a rare glimpse at one of the most important figures in 20th century card magic, captured while still in his prime.

Routines and techniques performed and explained:

  • Crossed Cases: Two decks of cards are impossibly removed from a criss-crossed box that can only hold one deck.
  • Direct Transposition: The top cards of two packets of cards change places.
  • Large Face Small Back: A method of showing a card to have a full sized face and a miniature sized back.
  • Snap Change: One card visually changes into another.
  • Aces To The Top: A three-phase routine where the four aces keep rising to the top of the deck after continuously being lost in the middle. The final phase is a triumph effect where the aces are the only ones face down and are in every fourth position for a poker deal.
  • D'Amico One-Hand Second Deal: A method of dealing the second card from the top with one hand.
  • Cigar Bottom Deal: A technique for doing bottom deals without turning your wrist.
  • Table Edge Pass: A method for nullifying a cut while sitting at a table.
  • Tap End Pass: An in the hands method of nullifying a cut.
  • Dribble Pass: A method of nullifying a cut while dribbling the cards between the hands.
  • Combination Pass: A method for doing the classic pass slowly.
  • Turn Down Palm: A method of palming the top card of the deck as it is being turned face down.
  • Future Classic Palm: A method for palming the top card as the deck is turned over or tabled.
  • The Punch Deal: A method of dealing a winning poker hand from a freely shuffled and cut deck.
  • No Touch Theory Second Deal: Details on how to do Marlo's technique for the second deal.
One hour of magic and technique performed and explained by Edward Marlo. Hosted by Dan Korem. Also includes interview segments about his friends and his magic. Produced by Meir Yedid Magic (from the A-1 Magicalmedia collection). Original release date: DVD: October 2002, VHS: 1982. Running time: Approximately 60 minutes.

Taped at the same time as The Cardician but released eleven years later this broadcast quality DVD once again allows you to experience Edward Marlo in his prime. You will learn many of Marlo's favorite routines and techniques as only he could demonstrate them. It is full of card magic that Marlo students have always yearned to see.

Routines and techniques performed and explained:
    • The Leaper: A shuffled deck is cut in half and a selected card jumps from the top of the spectator's packet to the magician's packet.
    • Ace Shuffle Sequence: You shuffle to, and cut to, the four aces from a previously shuffled deck.
    • Multiple Minus Bottom: A spectator decides the order of the four aces and at what positions they will be dealt from the deck.
    • Mock Center: A center dealing demonstration where the four aces are placed face down in the center of a face up deck and are dealt during a poker deal.
    • Mock Faro: The red and the black cards are interweaved so they alternate but upon displaying the cards they are separated into reds and blacks.
    • The Six Card Trick: A quick and direct version of the six-card repeat which has a kicker ending and uses a regular deck.
    • The Ten Card Trick: A version of the Edward Victor routine where a spectator hands you ten cards but each time you count them you have too many or too few cards. (performance only).
    • Side-Step Center Deal: A technique for dealing cards from the center of the deck.
    • Oh, I Forgot!: A card is peeked at from the center of the deck and appears on the face of the deck.
    • Marlo Deck Switch: An easy method of switching decks while seated.
    • Spectator Cuts To The Aces: A spectator cuts the deck into four piles and the top card of each pile is shown to be an ace.
    • Dribble Control: A method of controlling peeked at cards to the top of the deck while dribbling them.
    • Dribble Control Sandwich: The two aces are placed face-up on the deck. A card is peeked at from the center of the deck and it ends up between the aces.
    • The Spade Shuffle: A false shuffle that simulate a tabled riffle shuffle and cut.

These DVDs have a lot of good stuff on them. Many of the effects take time to learn and don't get that big a reaction. Of all the material on the DVDs, I picked up about half of it. One thing about the snap change I dont' get is that after you do the snap change, both cards are still in your hand; Marlo offers no suggestion to hide the card, to lap it or anything.

Overall, the dvds are pretty good. Worth getting just because Marlo is in it.
I think his books are badass if you can find them used anywhere.

This is perhaps one of the best investments in the shop. The Cardician features lots of techniques and some routines and the Legend is mostly routines and some techniques. I like the Cardician better. By the way most of the stuff you see in the demo video is from the Cardician.

I must say that this is a great DVD combo. Especially the Cardician. If you're into poker stuff and gambling, I highly recommend picking up this combo.
Note that these DVDs are on the difficult side. You're expected to know DLs, undercuts, lifts, etc.
My favourite effect out of the entire combo is Aces to The Top.
I really enjoyed the DVDs. I found the stories and interviews very interesting and amusing.

These videos combined with the revolutionary card technique book make a great set to study.
Know before you buy that he doesn't explain the routines or moves very thouroughly in the videos.
You are expected to know what he means by,
"double undercut", or "outjog the card" etc.
You can slow the DVD, or pause it,
but I think this DVD is more for people who are already comfortable with cards, and want to experience Ed do his thing.

I cannot recommed this combo enough! The effects performed by Marlo are amazing! I still can't get over "The Second Deal"! Not only does Marlo explain some of his flawless effects but you get to see him in action first and just to see him perform is amazing enough. I add a few of the effects from the DVD's to my routines and it has heightened the reactions. If I had to choose a couple that are sure-fire effects, effects that would give you the reactions you'll never forget, they would be "Dribble Control Sandwich" and "The Ace of Spades Trick". If you're a serious card worker and want to learn from the best, I highly recommend buying this combo from Penguin.

Well, here's the thing about this movie. Some stuff I use all the time, and it's a big mistake to pass it up. The other stuff I'd never use. So it's good, but the price is a little steep. The tricks that I liked were the ones that you could simply do in any routine, but the ones I didn't like are moves specifically made for long bulky routines where the moves can't be used elsewhere. It has some of both. It the end, I don't regret having gotten it.
