Comedy, like magic, employs the element of surprise, so it's only natural that we find the two working so well together.

Even the most serious magical performers have found moments where, through the use of humor, they can relax an audience before once again creating tension.

And, successful magicians in all genres know the power of laughter to strengthen misdirection, increase reactions, and leave lasting, positive impressions.

In this lesson, the very talented (and of course, funny) Gregory Wilson and Dan talk about the nature of comedy and how to incorporate it well into your magic.

They discuss what people find funny and why. Plus, they share some examples from their own work and guide you to developing your own comedic style.

Greg and Dan also offer you advice (gained from experience) about how to avoid some of the most common pitfalls of people who try to be funny.

They show you that laughter doesn't always come from telling jokes, and especially not from reciting a bunch of memorized stock lines.

As you'll see, most often the best responses come from honest reactions to interesting situations that you can manufacture and control with precision.

Whether you realize it or not, making people laugh at the right time (and for the right reasons) is the true mark of a professional, polished performer.

So get ready to laugh and learn some serious lessons about why being funny is so important... and how to do it well, with reliable results.

I've been with this series since it began, and fully intend to get them all - they will all be worth much studying, just as the original course is. This may be my favourite so far - these sorts of insights into how a couple of very successful magicians think can be much more valuable than another few tricks. I found it interesting and informative, and also entertaining. Dan and Greg kept it light-hearted and amusing, despite the potentially dry nature of discussing humour.

Really good insight into the art of humor. Great points made and some new ideas I hadn't thought of before. Even if you are not a comedic magician it gives good direction on how to present a better performance.

Too much Dan. 111 minutes and Dan must have been on 100. I think he should have used Wilson more and even considered a panel for the discuss. Discussion chapters are dry as is, but using more than one artist would add some variety. Showing more performance clips [other than Dan's only] would have freshened things up as well.
Each Tarbell Volume has opening "lecture" chapters. Try some different approaches in the future.

Tarbell 35: Being Funny Report this review

In this video lesson, Dan Harlan and Greg Wilson discuss the topic of incorporating comedy into your magic.

They discuss not only their theories on "how to be funny", but also "why things are funny", and "when to be funny" as a professional magician.

Included are videos of a few live performed comedic magic acts, used as examples and perhaps inspiration.

Will watching this lesson MAKE you funny?

My opinion is that this will give you a starting direction and various good tips for gaining or improving your sense of humor, and tips for working comedy into your magic performances.

I would watch this in conjunction with other material you may find about learning humor. I personally learned about humor through a variety of multiple sources. Branch out!

Practical theory about comedy and how to inject it into your magic. Definitely not the end all be all of comedy and how to be funny or make people laugh, but a good discussion on the theory of humor and presentation.

This is one of the most essential downloads for anyone who wants to go on any kind of stage.
Of course it is a discussion along the lines of Tarbell between Dan Harlan and Gregory Wilson. But you get so much out of it. Get it!
