These tricks stick with the original versions too closely for me.

It's interesting to see the device used for Alan Alan's rising card trick, but I'll never use it because a simpler method now exists (the one invented by Yigal Mesika).

The card box trick uses a box type that isn't used any more. It could be updated using greeting cards or bank cheques, where those boxes are still used, but it isn't done here.

I like Tony Noice's card transposition. It makes a card go from your fingers into the middle of a deck backwards. I'll practice it.

The Hindu Forces section goes over the modern, better way to do the Hindu force.

If you like the group mathematical tricks, I suggest looking up Woody Aragon's "How to find your other half" which is on the Penguin Live Super Sampler among other places.

Not for Me Report this review

To be fair, let me start off by saying that I am not a card magician, nor do I have any interest performing card magic.

With that said, I feel like most of these routines weren't very practical or very interesting to watch. Dan (of course) does a great job explaining, adding and adjusting methods or presentations that would make it more suitable for today's audience.

Covering "every trick in the book" means explaining methods or routines that aren't as good, strong or interesting as others. From part 1 of this lesson to part 2, I felt (personally) that there was a decline of relevancy and practicality from the first to the latter.

You may find something you like and will use; great. For me, it was a bust.

If you want to do a seance / spook show, this gives you a number of good effects, already in am routine.

However, other reviews have said this is not “their style.” But there is so much more here. Dan Harlan does his usual great teaching job, and part of that is giving much more than is in Tarbell. In this instance, he also describes am easily built table that could be used for other types of shows. Also, a handful of the tricks can be used for a regular mentalist show.

Another excellent chapter in the ongoing every trick in the book. In this chapter you will be getting effects that are good for all the venues and for beginners to pros. I especially liked what Dan did with a card box, it opened up a lot of possibilities. Even if you don't like card tricks, this is well worth getting.
