Palming allows you to do effects that would be hard to make as clean using any other technique. If you want to learn to palm a card you should check out Practical Card Palming Bob White-DVD, On Palming by John Carney - DVD, and Born to Perform Card Magic with Oz Pearlman (DVD). You'll then want to palm a card as much as possible.. .while driving, watching TV, watching a movie, walking around, etc. Get used to having a card palmed so you barely realize it is there.

You should always learn the basic of card magic.

Shuffles, Palms, Cuts, controls, forces...etc.

If you do not own a copy of "Royal Road to Card Magic" by Jean Hugard & Fred Braue and the complete Card College by Robert Giobbi, this is a great place to start.
