I experimented by buying different brands of index cards. Surprisingly, I found the brand that Walgreens sells to be extremely easy to tear. Index cards from Staples were hard to tear. It possible to tear any brand, using the suggestions above, but some brands make it easier to perform. Once I found a brand (batch) I liked, I bought about five packs, which will last for hundreds of performances. I also cut these index cards in half to do Osterlind's perfected center tear. As the others have said, I lower the half of the pieces closer to me, so that I rip the other half first and then it's much easier.

As mentioned above, and as addressed directly in the ebook (top of pg 14), bevel the pieces if it's too difficult to tear.

Once the corner is folded up-jog that piece above the others to make the tear easier.
