You need to have a reasonable knowledge of misdirection and you need to be aware of angles for cirtain spoon bending techniques, other than that you dont need to be proficient at slight of hand. If you are looking for a place to start I would reccommend metal by Dee Christopher or chaotic by Kieron Johnson.

If you've mastered the basic skills involved in sleight of hand magic, you'll be in a good position to bend spoons and forks. Misdirection, audience control--these are important skills for the metal bender.

However, you don't need to be a master of cards or master of coins to bend spoons or forks. The techniques used in metal bending are totally separate from the techniques used in other tricks. So, yes, it's conceivable that a novice could learn to bend spoons before learning cards or coins or anything else.

I should say....I'm not sure which spoon bending trick, in particular, you're referring to. Some use gimmicks, some do not. But Menny's Mind Over Metal is a good place to start. Or you can start where I started: Liquid Metal:

It's a bit pricier than Menny's trick, but you'll learn several ways to bend a fork. I've performed it 100s of times with much success.

Good luck to you!
