The System Card At Number

In Lesson 8 of the ACAAN Project, Dani introduces you to The System, and a Card At Number that is the stuff of legend. The entire deck is broken up into groups and handed out to many people to be thoroughly shuffled. The deck is completely mixed up. The groups of cards are gathered back up and reassembled into a complete deck. While the deck is being reconstructed one person names a number. After the deck is put back together another person merely thinks of a card. The number is named and that number is cleanly dealt onto the table. The card at that number is exactly the card the person was thinking of.

This lesson, just about an hour in length, is a deep dive into an approach to magic that Dani calls The System. Key takeaways for the student are:

The System
This unique way of looking at a deck of cards allows you to legitimately put the named card at nearly any position in the deck with almost no sleight of hand. The System is deceptively open and hides in plain sight. Beginners will use it to create miracles. Experienced magicians will use The System to create legends. This is worth the price of the entire course.

Ringing In Gaffs
Throughout the project, Dani has taught the students to perform Card At Number effects with ordinary decks, shuffled decks, and more. Now, Dani teaches his diabolical way of adding gaffs to a borrowed deck to fool magicians and laypeople alike. This is a technique you will use for Card At Number, as well as other effects you already perform.

Forced Naturalness
As often as magicians discuss making a trick look natural, sometimes you end up in situations where there is no way to be natural. Dani introduces the idea of forcing naturalness. The student will learn to turn unnatural actions into the only logical option.

Lesson Eight of The ACAAN Project introduces you to one of the most impossible versions of Card At Number in Dani’s repertoire. By adding something extra to the deck that you already own, and combining it with The System you will learn a real show stopper of an effect. This is the kind of Card At Number that you end the night with. In addition to learning The System Card At Number, you’ll become privy to some of the secrets that make the magic of Dani DaOrtiz so disarmingly devastating. It’s time to go to school with Dani DaOrtiz in lesson Eight of The ACAAN Project.

A conundrum…. Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on September 11th, 2021
What a lovely piece of magic, superbly executed by a real professional. With one caveat, I have nothing but praise. My concern? There is one very important moment. It’s a moment, really early on, where everything can turn to dust in an instant - unless it is well managed. We’re talking audience managment. Some simple instructions have to be followed precisely otherwise the trick is blown. So you’d think that these instructions would be pretty precise, right? Wrong. They are almost thrown away, lost in a bunch of other inconsequential instructions that are shared out amongst other participants.

Make no mistake, this casualness ultimately leads to the strength of the trick - a crucial instruction buried amongst a broader set of cod instructions, leaving the impression of utter casualness. Nothing could be better and it’s a moment that is handled with such deftness that nobody will later be able to reverse engineer it. But the risk…. The risk of putting over this instruction with a casualness that could be open to misinterpretation - and therefore a disastrous outcome - is simply immense. What’s more, so casual is the instruction that the trick runs the risk of being blown twice! Once, right at the start of the performance , and once, when the card is named. And that risk - that double jeopardy - left me very puzzled. I simply don’t believe that, in real life, this instruction - the lack of any emphasis and the deliberate muddling of it with other instructions - could be left to that degree of chance.

So what’s going on? I’m not suggesting there was any collusion, however, this is episode eight, so I’m guessing that everybody around the table knows each other, are very likely friends and some may be fellow magicians and many may even be familiar with the trick. All of which is fine, however, it does mean that Dani is amounts friends and may well have hand-picked the person he needs to give this crucial instruction to, knowing that he can then underplay it to the point of casualness that he would never risk with a stranger.

So a great trick and I’m very glad I made the purchase, but it is a trick with a conundrum, because if you do emphasise the instruction, (just enough to avoid disaster), then you also risk opening a door on the trick’s method.

Would I perform it? I would need to see some more performances to judge how this pivotal moment is handled in real life situations. And then I might. Because - make no mistake - it is a corker!

There's only one Dani! Report this review

First things first, wow what a routine! Why only 4 stars? Simply because I don't think I'd ever be able to perform this, at least not in any way resembling what Dani does. I've run into this before with Dani's stuff where while brilliant, a lot of it is dependent on Dani's laid back personality. It makes him an absolute joy to watch but it doesn't fit the performing style of a lot of people. I still think it's a worthy purchase and recommend it if for no other reason than to hear Dani's thought process in the make-up of this trick. Once learning the method and going back to watch the performance my mind was blown watching this routine being carried out by a master.

Some things to note, there are limitations with this trick, namely that it would need to be performed on a table and for a group of at least 5 or 6 people. Although the system that's taught could be adapted in a number of ways to be used under different conditions which is something we should strive for when buying an effect anyway.

Great principle Report this review

This version of ACAAN, the Nº8 will fool many magicians. I follow Dany DaOrtiz and I took almost the anterior 7 ACAAN...
This one looks more impossible than the others. What you really should learn is not ONLY the trick, but the principles that Dany uses. He teaches very thourougly because this is important. To do it natural, like he does. Looks, efortless and simple, but there is a preparation and ideas behind. Not only a good trick for me.

If you like ACAAN don’t pass ACAAN Chapter 8, up. I have many versions of ACAAN, but this is the one for me when several spectators can participate in the shuffling process.

ACAAN Chapter 6, is my go to ACAAN for a smaller crowd. I highly recommend both.

Both ACAAN Chapter 6, and Chapter 8, are within everyone ability so don’t shy away from either one. You’re going to learn very powerful magic.

Thanks Dani for releasing this. I have purchased several of your downloads and love everyone.

Nobel prize for magic Report this review

If Dani DaOrtiz were medical, ACAAN Project #8 would no doubt win for him the Nobel Prize for medicine. The genius behind the method is clever on steroids.
Excellent teaching and with that wonderfully engaging style of English, with which, only Mr DaOrtiz could charm the native English speaker.
Although there is little to no sleight of hand involved, I'm preparing for a lengthy amount of practice before taking this one out on the road. That is because there are quite a few subtleties which, I feel, need to become assimilated, in order to achieve maximum impact.
Finally, the ideal setting consists of a group of people sitting around a table, so bear this in mind when deciding to buy. Of course you will buy this effect anyway, because it is a must have. I haven't seen a better ACAAN than this one.

Smart but too much trouble Report this review

Dani is excellent: Likable and his personality perfectly fits the seemingly random mechanics he's using. But, given Dani's accent, it is extremely difficult to follow what he is trying to teach. The effect is outstanding but never something that I could sell. Just as Slydini's accent was crucial to his performance so too is Dani's. This is an excellent trick, but never one I could perform successfully.

Good concept Report this review

Dani is a passionate teacher and the trick is very clever and good. But Dani tends to give his explanations too extensive and repetitive. I would like more specific instructions, especially his tiring debauchery about naturality can be annoying. All in all, however, a recommendable effect.
