A classic of mentalism comes to life!

Annemann's Practical Mental Effects has been a landmark book for magicians and mentalists since its release in 1944. The routines that are contained in its pages have been influencing mystery performers for over 75 years.

This exciting new DVD series explores the work of Annemann and his Jinx contributors in a scholarly way, analyzing not only the presentation of some of the strongest mentalism ever created but also the thinking behind the effects. Richard Osterlind first performs the effects in their original form before an audience of non-magicians and then very nuance is exhaustively explained with the assistance of Jim Sisti.

Effect performed and explained in this volume include:

  • Bert Reese Secrets
  • You and Yours - Me and Mine
  • Extra Sensory Perception
  • Prophetic Tissue
  • Ultra Addition
  • Dead
  • Yggdrasil
  • 20th Century Newspaper Test
  • Par-Optic Vision
Running Time Approximately: 1hr 36min

I just finished watching volume 2 and a little underwhelmed ( see my review of Vol1) There are a couple of good pieces on this tape - I liked Bert Reese Secret and Para Optic  - both got a good response from the studio audience  and I could see  the possibilities with these two effects.   Yggdrasel  is a multi phase ESP card routine - it had a couple of interesting phases but overall the audience looked as bored as I was .  The Prophetic Tissue  was anti climatic and the audience was not that impressed.   I have the same critique as Vol 1 - the performance are very strained and some almost non existent - that's ok because it gives you a chance to see if the effect has strength on it's own.  The strength in the series is in the explanations and seeing how he has added improvements to the old effects.   I love the material Mr Osterlind has produced so far but I am Luke warm on this series.  I was hopping it would be right up there with 13steps which is excellent. Vol 1 was off to a good start but unfortunately  did not follow through - maybe Vol 3 will - I will not be purchasing the remainder of the series.  I still recommend purchasing the book and maybe one of the tapes to get a feel on how a master like Mr Osterlind can update old classics

Annemann's Practical Mental Effects Vol. 2 by Richard Osterlind is okay. I was able to get what I consider three workers out of the nine mentalist effects covered. My favorite is "Dead," because it is impromptu and simple. If presented properly, Dead can be baffling and spooky. The other two effects I liked were "You and Me - Yours and Mine" and "Par-Optic Vision." If you are new to mentalism, the methods and presentation techniques that Osterlind covers will be valuable. I generally like all of Osterlind's material and tend to collect the complete DVD sets. From that viewpoint, I am glad to have it.

Hi Everyone,

It's me again and from vol 2 I found these effects to be the best.

They are ''You and Yours - Me and Mine ''''Extra Sensory Perception'' ''Ultra Addition'' ''Par - Optic Vision''.All four are easy, practical and strong.

Thank you Mr Osterlind.

Frank Agius.

Slow, carefree, careless Report this review

The nonchalant demeanor by which this presentation is presented to the spectators really makes the dvd and performance move slowly. The work is not impressive, it's clumsy. I've never wanted to fast forward a magic or mentalism dvd before this one. Very low energy. The reason the audience doesn't see the MORE THAN OBVIOUS MOVES is because their eyes become so heavy with boredom that the performer can get away with anything. This "Columbo" style of magic doesn't work for this performance, though I imagine some performers could pull it off in a comical, fun way. Lennart Green maybe?
