Torn. Burned. Restored.
Wayne Houchin - creator of French Kiss, Control, and Thread - presents an incredible, practical, piece-by-piece restoration of a torn playing card.

A single playing card is torn into pieces - then visually restored under impossible conditions. Each piece seemingly fuses onto the next, leaving your audience with one of the most memorable souvenirs they've ever been given. They'll keep it forever.

18 Years in the Making
On November 27th, 1996, Wayne watched in awe as Guy Hollingworth performed on NBC's World's Greatest Magic. With that inspiration, Counterfeit was born. It can be performed surrounded, allowing your spectators to experience the effect from every angle. The card can be handed out for immediate examination. Let them keep it.

Expert Instruction
Produced by theory11, with 30 minutes of detailed instruction and performance tips from one of the leading minds in magic. Learn the nuances that make this one of the most engaging, powerful, practical torn and restored effects ever released.

I purchased this a few weeks back. For some reason I love TNR effects and have a chunk of them already (Torched and restored, TNR Matthew Bich, corned, TTR, etc...) Each of them has their own unique presentations that work in their own ways. It really will depend upon what you want the audience to see in the end.

Do you want a flash production? Piece by piece restoration? Color change? How much of a gimmick or cleanup do you want? Once you ID which you want then you should choose one of the ones I listed above.

For this routine I like it because it is a piece by piece restoration. I have combined Wayne's tear and restoration with the torched and restored ending to make it a more powerful restoration.

Pros

-You make a very convincing piece by piece tear but, you have to be careful during the routine...Can't explain further without exposing.

-In the end you end clean! Some you can't and can't hand out. This one you can after you do the cleanup which flows with the routine if you CHOOSE to use the lighter method.

-Your hands can be shown empty at all times. There really is not another card in your hand during the tearing portion of the trick. You can show your hands on both sides.

-You learn a very deceptive switch which Wayne says took him a while to build confidence to do. I see his point but if you work with coins and do retention type vanishes, this method of misdirection is not too difficult for you.

-No tape, rubber gloves, gimmicks, rubber cement, etc...The torn card is ungimmicked and so is the final card. You CAN prepare the final card to look like it was burned, but you do not need to if you do not want to or if you do not want to use the lighter method.

-Teaching- Wayne is a great instructor. I have purchased several tricks from him in the past. Regardless if i did not like the effects secret, not the case here, I find his presentations of the secret to be straight to the point and sincere. He explains it in full detail and is passionate about his effects.

-You can do this strolling, street, etc...There is only one or two times during the restoration where people cannot be behind you. After those quick moments you can have them watch from almost every angle.

Cons-

-The card cannot be signed. I wouldn't say this is terribly a bad thing because as he explains, the audience really has no reason to sign it to prove it is the same card in the end. The way you present the trick and show your hands empty "sell" that it is the same card. If you really want them to be able to sign it, go with the "Torched and restored" TNR.

-There is a slight amount of sleight of hand needed in the end to clean up. It is not bad. Honestly, I prefer to learn sleight of hand and even though your audience may not know you are doing, or approach the amount of time needed to learn a sleight, I think it is worth it. It sells the art form and makes it feel more like magic to the spectators rather than just having a gimmick do all the work.

In the end this is another great TNR trick. There are so many of these things out there now a days that you need to find something that works for your style. If you are looking for a deceptive, non-gimmicked, minor sleight of hand, piece by piece restoration, then this may your effect.

If you want a flash appearance or something that is more focused on the end production, use something else. This is honestly a great piece by piece restoration and I highly recommend it!

This method is even greater than I expected it to be.

As I said before to fellow magicians:

"These men are rocket scientists for me. It is phenomenal how they come up with such great and creative solutions to problems.

This is pure art (for the audience and for you)"

The only reason to not buy this would be if you are a sorcerer and don't need methods at all to make things happen ;)

This is my favorite version of TnR card. I have looked at several but have been put off by angles or the use of certain gimmicks to pull off the effect. This version has a very natural handling and is not very angle sensitive at all. It isn't hard and is easy to remember the sequence of tears. I would definitely recommend checking this one out. If you really want to do TnR though, I still recommend checking out a good selection of the others (torched and restored particularly) to allow you to choose which one is best for you.

There is a lot better TnR tricks than this
one on penguin magic. Did'nt care for the
final piece restoration for this complex
piece by piece explanation. Makes a sorry
excuse about the fact. Had he used a little
imagination and creative thought, he could
have made this a super TnR trick. Instead
he choose to go out in a blazing flop.
Counterfeit is a fitting name for this poor
substitute, Check out Torched and Restored
download, it's the original trick. Sorry
this trick is not for me.

There are so many 'Torn and Restored's but this gets my vote for the best for several reasons.

1) Easy to make
No big objects or products needed, just the basic tape and scissors alongside a few others to make the easily portable gimmick.

2) Easy to perform
No difficult sleights needed to perform this effect.

3) Very fooling
This is a killer illusion for all audiences and works well in almost every close-up scenario.

I highly recommend this.

Excellent effect and everything is clearly explained and demonstrated at a great pace, with performer's angle, and very easy to follow along with. Will need a lot of practice, but following along with the video will make it so much easier. Sometimes it's harder to follow along with videos once you have the gist of it because of all the pauses for explanation that you don't need in practice, but this has two angles with complete follow along of the routine at the end. Perfect.

Also thankful he mentioned setting a piece of card aside in a pant pocket or DRESS and remembering us ladies!

The effect is amazing. Wayne Houchin really outdid himself perfecting the effect. There are a few of downsides to this trick. As most people say, the card can't be signed which is true. That isn't a big deal for most people though. Also, you need to have a lighter to make the effect look good. You can do it without a lighter and it will just be like a normal torn and restored. In a way you need the lighter in order to make it look good, and most of the time lighters aren't allowed in some places. This is also bad if you are a young magician. Finally, I don't think that it looks as beautiful and elegant as it does in the trailer. They make video cuts in the most awkward parts in the performance. It also can't be done completely surrounded

Originality: 7/10
Practicality: 8/10
Angles: 6/10

Does this work in everyday situations? YES

Would you recommend this? YES

Overall: I recommend this completely. Worth every penny! The problems that I mentioned before are only small problems. GET THIS EFFECT!

After looking for over a year for TnR effect , finally my search is over. I have bought so many TnR effects , most of them are not practical and some require too much work and setup. This is my first WH download and I am blown away by his teaching. Hands down the best teacher . he teaches every move so good and explained it thoroughly . He just became one of my favourite magician and the effect is practical to perform.
