The Pass with Randy Wakeman Report this review

Randy Wakeman was very unsatisfied with the results of this particular DVD. First and foremost, Randy was not given any input into editing the project. Had that occurred the product would be must more streamlined and sophisticated. Once the video shoot was completed, Randy’s thorough explanations and routines were edited from the final product and replaced by someone else explaining them. Unfortunate some were incorrectly explained. One would expect the final product to include the explanations from the renowned card expert himself—rather than from a fill-in.

Not much teaching here Report this review

Clearly he is great at the pass (IMO) and a lot of variations are shown in the DVD. But I found there to be very very little instruction on how to actually execute the moves, no useful details on where to place your fingers, etc. other than the most basic elements. I'm not new to the pass but certainly not an expert either, would have liked a lot more in terms of details. It assumes a lot and teaches a little. Would not recommend.

I got this on a promo deal, but after watching it I was amazed. It covers a lot of material and might be a bit quick so get ready to use the pause/rewind button alot. But if I knew that this DVD was so good , I would have bought it myself. I found numerous ways to spice up my routines. If you have already a couple of tricks you do, then get this DVD to touch up those routines and give them a bit of spice. The different types of passes covered have gotten me out of many sticky situations in bars where I do most of my tricks.

Excellent take on a critical move Report this review

Yes, Wakeman is not the most dynamic teacher on this DVD, but he IS a good, clear teacher, offering many tips as he demonstrates several effective passes. Emphasizing variations on the Hermann pass, he does a great job, showing a good variety of skills.

My only real complaint -- it's why I don't give this DVD a 5, and it's a BIG complaint I have with most DVDs focusing on a single move like this one -- is that you can't perform the routines offered until you MASTER the pass. Unless you can perform several passes while inviting people to watch your hands (rather than trying to cover the pass), the routines are worthless. Instead, I would have preferred to see some routines where the pass is a critical but not the ONLY move required for success.

Otherwise, an excellent exploration of an undervalued move.

A Nice Resource Report this review

I think this is a DVD that will get mediocre reviews initially, and positive reviews in the long run. No effects are taught and the teaching is rather bland. I mean, Mr. Wakeman is merely covering many different versions of the pass. The brief historical background, along with Wakeman's Marlo anecdotes are useful, and will be appreciated in time.

Wakeman is a strong opponent of the classic pass, and this work reflects that view (look into Marlo's combo pass, explained herein, for an excellent variation on the classic pass).

Here you get a very good mix of this important utility move. There is no substitute for the pass. One criticism is the top-card cover pass. Other, better variations could have been taught. Otherwise this is a fine mix.

I won't start yelling my head off at how amazing this DVD is because im sure you've heard it all before. In context Im a 17 year old student having done magic for the last couple of years (well the last year in essence since it took me the first year to filter the rubbish I saw everywhere and find penguin). I've used many penguin DVD's to wonderful effect, coming across the odd DVD now and then that had really horrible teaching (Xtreme cuts with Keone) or just boring and unimpressive material (lucky 7's). Now this DVD may not have explanations that rival Oz's or Jay's, but it is a hell of a lot better than others I've seen. If you are willing to pay close attention and not have everything pre-done for you like a at nursery school then there's little reason why you cannot learn well from this DVD. Besides the amount of material on the DVD is IMMENSE!!! I mean it's pretty huge from what i've seen in the past. Bottom line if you want to learn the pass from scratch then it may take more than this one DVD to get it (depending on your own natural grasp of card handling) - but if you have some idea on how the pass works or have mastered it and want to know a ton more variations on it then go for this without question - this DVD will give you passes handed down by some of the greatest magicians in the world.

DONT BUY FOR TEACHING... Report this review

Ok...The trick alone was good, but the teaching just the opposite. I didn't think the teaching was very...entergetic in my eyes. I would not reccomend this. I recommend the trick, not teaching. =D

Excellent Explanations! Report this review

It's a shame that the moderators have allowed such misleading reviews. This dvd explains very clearly. Each move is shown from several angles, from above the shoulders and in slow motion to make learning easier. It is true that his voice seems monotonous, but I didn't buy the dvd to be entertained but to learn. And Randy Wakeman is a true pro. Minimal talking so you can focus on very important moves. This is a must for any serious cardician and well worth the price.
