Return Flight for Walk Around

I do walk around with limited (meaning...no) table space. Can the spectators spread the cards in their hands to see if the chosen card is missing?...and show that it's in the other half? Or is all the deck handling limited to the magician? Thanks.

Possibly, the table makes everything a little more clear. It will take a lot of audience management to make sure the method is not seen, you are also trusting a random spectator to handle a deck of cards without a table which may not work out.
