With so many card gaff resources out there, there’s never been one to show you how to print cards. Why is that? Possibly because, if you’ve ever tried to print your own cards, you know it’s a challenge. Well I’ve taken all the guess work out of it. In this download I show you step by step how to print your own card gaffs right at home.

WARNING: this does not include any pre existing images for gaff making. the images in the ad copy are for demonstration purposes only. This download is intended for personal use only. Not to pass off someone else’s creation as your own!

NOTE: the production quality isn’t the best. This was filmed on an iPhone and tripod. But don’t let that scare you off. The information given is of most importance.

Disappointing lack of detail & experience Report this review

Boy, was I excited to see a new download come available on the topic of card printing. I purchased it immediately when I saw the listing. This is a subject that holds great interest for me, and is something that I have dabbled with for over a decade. I came into the download hoping to find some great tips and tricks that could improve my printing results. Unfortunately, I walked away sorely disappointed.

Here’s the good: Michael comes across as a very nice & earnest guy, who is excited about sharing this material. He also spends a good amount of time covering the ethical & legal ways to approach making your own gaffs and the potential grey areas of copying marketed tricks.

Michael does teach a few important foundational bits of info, such as one way to prep the card for printing, and how to finish it. That’s pretty much where the good elements end. Granted, his end results look very good when comparing a self-made gaff to a factory-made one. But based on the info given and the equipment used, the average buyer will not match Michael’s results quickly or easily.

My issue isn’t so much what he does teach, but what is left out. There is no information on other methods of prepping a blank, using a computer and/or software program to create or print artwork from scratch, ways to get consistent card alignment, ways to use laser printers as well as inkjet printers, etc. He says that you can print using your home printer, but does not actually give real-world examples or steps for doing that - everything done in the video is done on a professional, office-grade all-in-one copier/printer.

Michael also gives away his lack of knowledge and experience on the topic when he mentions that he has been printing on cards for about a year and a half, and also making the claim that there have not been any instructional videos released on the topic.

Had he done his homework, he would have come across the terrific “Versatile Monte and Beyond” DVD by Mark Allen, which is a treasure trove of DIY card printing knowledge. It is unfortunately off the market, but if you can find a copy, I would highly recommend it. There are some websites that give in-depth, detailed information about at-home card printing. There are even a few videos online that are 1/10th the length of this video, yet still provide more detailed information than Michael’s, particularly on the topic of consistent and accurate card alignment.

I have no issue with the fact that Michael has released his take on it, nor will I pick on him for the production values since you can see and hear what you need - though in this day and age, it is a poor excuse to ask this price for a download and not deliver slightly better production values. People deserve to be compensated for their efforts, but this download would still be overpriced at half of its current cost. An in-depth, far-reaching video on the topic would be worth twice the asking price and then some, but that is not what has been delivered.

If you have never thought about printing a card before now, this download will give you enough basic information to achieve results. But there is far too much important information that is missing for me to be able to recommend this. Given the wealth of terrific magic downloads on the market in this price range, the asking price is much too high for what is given. The buyer will be left to a lot more of their own trial and error than they will likely expect. If you already have any experience or knowledge on this topic, you will probably walk away without having learned anything new. Not recommended.

As some of the other reviewers have said, this has inspired me to do more creating and to transfer some of my gaffs that I don’t use anymore to Phoenix so I can start using them again. Michael explains everything very clearly and it really isn’t too difficult of a process (although it should be noted that the production quality is definitely not on level with a professional magic company’s quality standard). I would recommend getting this if printing your own gaff cards is something you’re interested in!!

I forgot I was on Penguin for a second because I’m not used to seeing a trailer without a massive amount of cuts, 3D text and choreographed applaud. Finally, an honest trailer for once!

I can’t really speak to how well this works as I have not tried this with my own printers yet. There are many brand and model printers. Some are bottom feeders and some are top. You are essentially putting triple the thickness into your printer as a normal price of paper. So you will just have to try it out.

What I can say as that the results Mr. Pilkey printed were stunning! I could not tell the difference. I believe that with a good quality home office laser printer, you can also get the same results. Possibly, even better results than an inkjet. The rollers are also much stronger as they are made to handle heavier paper stock. I have duplicated many things with my laser and the results are also stunning. I never thought to do it on playing cards though. Thank you for that Michael.

Who cares if the quality of the video is not up to par. The information from it was. After just one printing it basically pays for the download. Don’t think of this as what effects can I copy. Use your imaginations. Use this to add something new to the magic community.

This sparked my interest and I have to say that this is a really great download. Although the quality of the video is not great, the contents of it is. You learn how to print up any gaffs that you might come up with. I recommend this for anyone who is experienced in card gaffing. Enjoy!

It's just the basics yet still worth way more than $8 Report this review

Overall what you are getting in this download is the following

- How to prep a card for printing
- Information on printers and ink needed
- Image placement and print resolution
- How to seal the card

You will not get a run down in graphic design and you will not get any gaffs with the download, but then again that is not the point of this product. You get exactly what it in the title and that's it.

A great download, the information is very useful and I'm very excited to play around with this.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly... Report this review
Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on January 5th, 2019
Well maybe not ugly, but there are a few things that need to be said. First, I’m going to have to ask how Penguin’s review algorithms work because I’m not understanding how something has 5 stars despite having several 4 and 2 star reviews. The math doesn’t make sense there.

There are some pros and cons as there are with everything. I want to point out that I liked the download. I learned some things from it I can use. I don’t want to go too much into the cons because I respect Michael Pilkey both as a person and a creator. But I feel some things do need to be pointed out.

The cards in this video were printed on a Canon industrial Laser printer which at one point cost $18,000. Printing these on your $60 home inkjet will not have the same results. Will anybody notice or even care?? Probably not. So the question you have to ask yourself is whether you will care. Are you that much of a perfectionist?

Others have noted that there are other sources available on printing cards. There probably are. You can’t expect Michael or anyone to be a walking Wikipedia of magic history. Magic is difficult to source. It’s even taken me years just to source certain sleights.

Some things I wasn’t happy with is that Michael did not demonstrate this with his own home printer and we all know he has tried this with his home printer. I can only assume the results were not the same as the industrial printer. But, making a video about home printing, I would have liked to see demonstration on an actual home printer.

It would also have been nice to have Microsoft word editable templates so the card is centered. Something I would have included with the download if I released this. It seemed this video is just a little bit rushed.

Overall, I was satisfied with the purchase and would recommend it. The price is low enough to get some good information from it to begin experimenting with your own gimmicks.

Very helpful Video Report this review
Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on January 3rd, 2019
This is quite a helpful video on a unique subject. Michael is a very thorough teacher, and clearly a master on the topic. It's one thing to be knowledgeable, and it's quite another to effectively impart that knowledge to others.
If printing custom cards interests you, you would be hard pressed to find a better resource for a better price.
