"Every time Ian Rowland performs something I stand in awe at the cleverness of his routining, thought processes and execution of the things he creates. I have seen Ian slay in a variety of different performing arenas and if you want to learn solid hard-hitting mentalism pay attention to everything this cat has to say!" -Pete Turner

"Ian Rowland is always on our radar. His significant contributions to mentalism and cold reading are essential for serious students of these arts. His routines are clever and creative, for sure, but Ian also shows you how to get the most out of them, how to connect with your audience and -  as he often says - 'make magic meaningful'. " -Jeff & Tessa Evason

"Ian is one of my favourite performers and thinkers. He's extremely creative, understands how audiences think and creates his routines with concepts that really connect. If you want mentalism that is clever, engaging and more importantly works in the real world then I'm sure you'll love what he has to offer."  -Marc Paul

"Ian has an incredible mind. He dreams up some great ideas and I'm proud to count him among my friends in the magic world." -Shin Lim

"Ian is a polymath. He's really smart, particularly in matters magic and mental. His input has helped many a performance as does his off beat and very intelligent point of view. I value his vision so should you" -Marc Salem

"I have always liked Ian's work as an inventor and performer. But it's his thoughts on making magic meaningful that I think many people will enjoy and learn from." - Lior Manor

What will he teach?

Mind Sniffing- A straightforward mindreading effect that has everything you want in an opener: visual focus, direct plot, audience involvement and a good amount of humor leading to a very satisfying mystery and a strong applause cue.

A Lesson In Memory- The entire audience experience a tranformative moment when what seems like an 'impossible' mental challenge suddenly becomes easy! A new and original demonstration that Ian has never published before. Not a trick... this one's for real.

The Psychic Crowd- A fascinating two-phase routine in which you demonstrate strong, pure telepathy. In Phase 1, the audience attempts to read the mind of a spectator who has written down one, single piece of information. In Phase 2, taking the demonstration to the next level, you prove you can read the spectator's mind even when there's nothing written down and you have nothing to work with except her thoughts.

Truth Or Lies- One of Ian's signature pieces that he has presented all over the world, everywhere from parties to academic conferences and corporate lectures. It's a human lie-detector routine that's simple to perform but makes a big impression!

Math Genius- Another demonstration in which the audience experience that moment when an 'impossible' mental challenge — this time involving numbers — suddenly becomes easy. One spectator discovers he or she can perform lightning mathematical calculations they would never have thought possible! Like 'A Lesson In Memory', there's no trick, no fakery... this one's for real.

Pulp Prediction- A relatively straightforward effect that fits either a 'persuasion and influence' or 'prediction' theme. The method isn't new but you'll enjoy the presentational twists, built on two promises you make at the start, that turn it into a big, feature item with a great visual climax. Plus there's a highly satisfying 'slow burn' gag built into the routine.

Twin Think- One of Ian's favourite card tricks. Perform it anywhere — you don't even need a table. The theme is 'minds in harmony' and the effect involves two spectators from the audience. It may be 'just a card trick'... but wait until you see the reaction it gets!

One In A Million- It's a book test but a very special one. Not only is it quite possibly the purest, most deceptive book test you can present, with apparently zero chance of trickery, but there's a twist ending that you will NOT see coming and that your audiences will love! The script and presentation are well worth studying and the operational principle has countless applications.

This Sequel Doesn't Disappoint! Report this review

Ian's first lecture on Penguin had (and continues to have) a huge influence on my thinking. My hopes were high for "the sequel" and I'm pleased, though not surprised, to say that I was NOT disappointed!

Regardless of whether you're already working in the corporate market or if you're beginning your journey towards that goal this lecture is filled with great routines/methods and EVEN BETTER philosophies/theories.

Ian is a pro and his years of experience are evident in the attention to detail he gives throughout each of the routines.

Mind Sniffing: The core method is tried and true but I REALLY like how open and fair Ian has made it look. This is, to describe it in magic vernacular, a very clean looking C.A.A.N. but I've had several thoughts on how to apply this basic idea to non-card presentations.

A Lesson in Memory: What a LOVELY and ELEGANT way to involve the entire audience! This isn't really a "trick" - it's more of a demonstration that drives home the central message of Ian's "motivation mentalism" premise. I can definitely see myself adapting this to my style and audiences.

The Psychic Crowd: This was a highlight for me. I imagine this will receive quite polarizing reactions because the method is BOLD but so devious. Upon learning the nuances during the explanation my mind immediately went to work on different ways I could you use the framing Ian shared. Again, this won't be everyone's cup of tea but properly presented (with the overall "deception through honesty" philosophy that permeates Ian's act) this will receive great reactions.

Truth or Lies: A simple routine and method but, as Ian calls it, it's a WORKHORSE that can play in every conceivable performing environment.

Math Genius: This is another "real" demonstration that emphasizes the overall message of Ian's show.

Pulp Prediction: Here's a prime example of Ian stretching loads of mileage out of something quite small. The routining, along with the self-promotional potential built into the revelation, make for a fantastic piece of corporate mentalism.

Twin Think: An EXTREMELY simple (both in terms of presentation and method) card routine that can be done with any full deck at a moments notice. This is all about "addition through subtraction" in that Ian has eliminated all unnecessary finger flicking and presentation fluff to zero in on one specific moment of synchronicity.

One in a Million: Presentationally you can't ask for a more impossible looking book test. IT FEELS SO CLEAN! The method may disappoint some but please listen to Ian's rationale and pay close attention to the PERFORMANCE ATTITUDE that Ian is trying to get across with this piece. This routine gave me plenty of food for thought and I imagine it will do the same for you.

The thoughts above may sound like "fan-boy ravings" (yes I'm a fan of Ian's work) but I don't invest in these lectures to copy and paste parts of other performer's acts into my own. I won't perform any of these routines exactly as Ian did but I took away MANY touches that will enhance my existing routines (and inspire some new ones) so for me this was more than worth the meager asking price.

Ian - the sequel (for me) was another hit! Thank you!

Strong Routines and an Excellent Lesson in Scripting Report this review

Fantastic show containing some really strong mentalism. What stood out for me was how well the show was structured and scripted. It shows how good scripting can elevate already strong effects. Highly recommended.

It was very enjoyable to see Ian's act. I loved the audience memory challenge, this was fresh and highly original. And I have to say, his book test finale completely fooled me. Genius.

No pipe dreams, just real world performing material Report this review

Ian's second penguin lecture demonstrates how various mentalism pieces can be coherently strung together in an act with an overarching theme.

The material presented is very solid and has obviously been audience-tested many, many times. Ian has a world-class reputation as a creator as well as a performer and this experience shows. You can obviously learn from him just by watching the performance. Fortunately, you of course also get all the details on all the tricks afterwards as Ian's and Dan's mind join for a lively discussion on the workings as well as on many details that surround the tricks.

Absolutely and highly recommended!

This is a truly fantastic lecture.
Ian’s authority on mentalism and performance shines through in this masterclass of routining, thinking and delivery.
This isn’t a collection of tricks and explanations - this is a lecture in the truest sense.
I highly recommend this for ALL performers.

Invaluable insight into audience reactions Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on September 12th, 2019
I enjoyed the performance immensely, but found the insight into the way non-magician audience members think particularly valuable. Plus there is a masterful lesson on how to cope when things go differently.

Liked the rough smooth routine. Also, the BRICK lady. I think I have a sense of humor, and my shows embody that……but Pulp Fiction did not appeal to me for inclusion in my shows. That’s why there’s chocolate. Vanilla and strawberry,
Not fond of stooges, but his reference to casting them as allies in the 10 book test is something I’m going to take a good look at…..philosophically and practically.
I am in the midst of introducing some effects created by me , here in Cuenca Ecuador, and would love to get his reaction to them.
