"Mark Calabrese is the real deal. Sure, he's been putting out clever and original commercial releases for years. Yeah, he has killer sleight-of-hand chops, particularly when it comes to card table artifice (you have to see him do false deals to truly appreciate what you won't see). But what really impresses me about Mark is that he is a real-world working entertainer: polished and professional, charming and funny, I love watching him perform for the public. Put it all together and you see why I mean it when I say: Mark Calabrese is the real deal." -Jamy Ian Swiss

"Mark is every bit as clever and skilled as he is tattooed. An Illustrated Man of Mystery. Whose work and knowledge is worth your attention." -Jon Armstrong

"Mark Calabrese is one of my favorite creators. His ideas are fully thought out, practical, and completely ingenious. If you want magic that absolutely destroys people, Mark is your guy. I purchase very little magic these days, but when Mark releases something, I get it immediately. I'm honestly not sure why he continues to publish. I would keep ideas like these to myself. If you're looking for magic that is guaranteed to rock peoples' world, Calabrese is your guy. He is truly one of the best. If you like high-impact material that is guaranteed to deliver astonishment, look no further. If I had a nickel for every time Mark fooled me, I would pay off my house. Then I would hire Mark to keep breaking my brain." -Ben Seidman

"Mark is devious and miraculous...and awesome!" -Ricky Smith

"Mark creates direct, astonishing and highly creative magic. His technical ability combined with his natural talent for performance make him a fascinating and engaging magician." -Luke Jermay

"Mark is somebody who I want to keep secret from the world but at the same time tell everybody about. I'm blessed to be somebody who he's willing to share his secrets and ideas with and lucky are those who get the same privilege. I'm his biggest fan."  - Daniel Madison

"Mark is an 'in-your-face' force of nature, thoroughly unafraid to challenge magic's conventional wisdom. His performances constantly remind me that personality is at the heart of entertainment." - Atlas Brookings

"I always enjoy seeing Mark's work. He is someone who always pulls out a gem or two when you least expect it."  - Alan Rorrison

“Every time I see Mark he has something new to blow me away. A very creative thinker with the hands to match.” - Doug McKenzie

"Mark's show and lecture was the best I've seen this year. You are going to hate how good he his."-Nick Locapo

"Mark is sharing the real work. This isn't just a masterclass in card handling, this is how a top pro puts together one of the best close up sets in New York. When I grow up I want to be Mark." -Erik Tait

"When I perform close up its just me pretending to be Mark Calabrese" -Dalton Wayne

"Mark's lecture is one that will live in my memory for a long time. It's incredibly entertaining and the magic is stuff that you will do!" -Nick Popa

"Forget what you thought you knew about performing magic. It's that good. Mark's show is not only fooling, his work will give you an inside look at what a world class worker performs regularly at one of the most prestigious magic venues in NYC. He leaves no stone unturned in the lecture, sharing each effect in meticulous detail, with insights and tips that will make your magic stronger and more engaging, regardless of what kind of magic you perform. -Travis Askew

"Mark is as skillful with a deck of cards as he is funny. While watching him work there was not a moment where I wasn’t either laughing hysterically, or completely fooled. Mark is truly a genius." -David Newell

Mark will be the first to admit that his style is not for everyone. This isn’t one of those products you can watch a few times and steal the entire act line for line. Mark uses language that some might find offensive - but if you’re a grown adult complaining about that, we might have other issues to unpack. But just because you can’t steal this material doesn’t mean there aren’t lessons to learn.

The opening set is funny and engaging. It shows off some great skill without biting the audience to sleep like many gambling routines. This is funny, well structured, and highly engaging. Also, the spin-out moves he uses to get a four-of-a-kind is my new favorite thing.

His pin code divination was a powerful and intelligent use of one of my favorite sleights.

I also enjoyed his rants and rambles on motivation, character, and structure of effects. These are excellent insights from a working pro.

Every effect is super strong! All of the material is well thought out and has been performed and honed in the real world. More importantly, Mark explains why he performs the material the way that he does and shows how it can be put together into a killer set. Highly highly highly recommended!

A Strong Performance of Great Card Magic Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on June 20th, 2022
All of the material here is great, but what you're really paying for is his Speakeasy Magick set. I have never been to Speakeasy Magick, but I have two layperson friends who separately saw the show, and they both said that Mark was their favorite out of the 6 or 7 incredible magicians they saw that night. I was excited to learn what material he included in his set.

I knew that he presented himself as a card cheat, so I was expecting riffle stacking, center deals, and dealing a lot of cards. However, there isn't anything more difficult than a second deal, and the set is very fast paced, with effects happening constantly. The audience never needs to know any rules to card games, and yet Mark gives the idea that what he is doing is cheating at cards. Unlike most gambling themed sets, there's tons of audience interaction and by-play. The set has a strong build to it and a memorable climax.

I saw that some reviewers don't like Mark's persona. It's true that Mark goes for an adversarial, confrontational approach with his audience. But I'd disagree when people say he has an ego. Performers like Jason Ladanye and David Malek really turn me off with their egos. But Mark makes fun of himself ("This is why you shouldn't play cards with someone with a face tattoo," and other jokes along these lines) just as much as he makes fun of his audience. While a lot of cardshark performers will use lines about how the moves they are doing are incredibly difficult, or about how smart and clever their cons are, Mark does nothing of the sort. Maybe others are offended by the language, as Mark curses a lot. But can you imagine how weird it would be if this magician with face tattoos at a speakeasy had a squeaky clean act?

The only complaint I'd have with the other tricks is that some of them require extra purchases. If you want to do the passcode trick, you'll need to know one of the methods out there for gaining a passcode, whether it's with an app, a calculator method, or even just a billet peek. Mark explains the method he uses, but you'll need to purchase that product. However, he shows multiple applications for the original sleight in this routine, so you can perform a similar effect without a passcode reveal.

Similarly, the last trick uses a well known gimmick. There are many versions on the market, and if you're crafty, you could make one yourself, but the one Mark uses costs over $200. I only point these two things out because these are two very strong tricks, and you should know what parts of the routine you're getting with this lecture and what you'll need to purchase separately.

Overall, I think this is a great lecture, and you'll learn a lot about routining from Mark. And unlike some previous penguin lives with Erik as the host, Erik asked insightful questions without interrupting the flow of the lecture.

Highly recommended.

Really funny, really smart Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on August 6th, 2022
These are some smart card tricks. Really Really good one. I really liked the opening one and the idea of the PIN code one.

Other than that Mark's ideas about card magic are interesting and thought-provoking. Even though I don't agree on everything, his kind of thinking is important to hear.

I also liked his character. This kind of character is engaging and funny and keeps you on your toes. Agree this isn't for everybody, but I think the preview video gives enough examples to know if it's for you or not.

Fun but brute force Report this review

Mark manhandles remarkably, and forces them into submission. For the average viewer, a bit more subtlety and less knuckle busting might have been better. 4 out 5 stars because he is great to watch and otherwise solid.

Mark has been one of my favorite magicians for years! His skills are second to none and he’s also a great performer. You can tell these routines have been audience tested over and over again. There’s a lot of knowledge in this lecture. Do yourself a favor and learn from one of the best!

Departure from the norm Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on June 21st, 2022
This lecture is a departure from the norm and is very much appreciated. Mark has a great character and makes a gambling-centric act really engaging and entertaining, even if the spectators don't know gambling.

He teaches some really slick moves that can be used outside of the tricks he uses them in- I'll personally be taking a handful of these and applying them to tricks I do today to make them better.

The Jersey character feels right at home for me (North Jersey). If you're soft or 90 yrs old, maybe you won't appreciate the language, though.

Watched your #3 download. I really enjoyed your magic. It was very good. I was disgusted by your character. Your language; your condescending attitude; all your F-bombs - absolutely terrible.. I’ve been to Speakeasy Magic and you were not there. Whenever I go back - and I will - I will make sure you are not there.
I’m anonymous because New Yorkers will know my name.

The ego has landed Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on June 20th, 2022
Mark's live material was lethargic and really lacked big reactions. He even jokingly said, "Am I boring you. I'm even boring myself".
I loved Mark's first P3 lecture but this was a miss. He dropped so many F'Bombs during the performance that I thought I got radiation poisoning. I understand his Jersey style of backroom card-table magic but where is that Calabrese charm?
