This is full of such great stuff it is ridiculous. $75.00 for this book is a steal. I think David's magic is great, but I think he excels at parlor type magic and this book is full of great effects. There are also wonderful close up things and just too much good stuff to talk about. There is a good amount of theory and advice as well. This has been a go to book for me that has been worth 10x the cost.

I have all of Davids books and everyone is packed with usable material. This is a large book and has great material - His card at any number is great. The mentalism section is worth the price of the book. There is card , coin, paper money and more. Each effect is a lesson in how David approaches magic along with thought provoking essays. This is one of those books that is a must for the serious performer.

This book is a treasure trove of essays and magic effects! There is some killer close-up and stage material here. I highly suggest "Sanitized For Your Protection"! There are effects with paper money, coins, cups, etc. There are close-up and parlor/stage effects as well! Simply put, put in your cart now!

Didn't buy it through Penguin. I actually pre-ordered it through David Regal's site. The book is lovely and has some really terrific magic in it. Not just cards and coins. There is a pleasing variety of appealing close up magic. Everything is top notch. Regal is a modern master. In fact, if you like modern close up magic, then you should have all of Regal's books. His 1st collection, "Star Quality - The Magic of David Regal", is out of print but now available in "Lorayne: Classic Collection Vol 4." This also includes "The Magic Book" and "The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel." It's , but it includes 3 classics. However, I was unhappy with some of the editing. Especially, some exclusions of material from the original text. Also, don't forget "Clos-Up and Personal" and "Constant Fooling 1 & 2." It's all great.

I really like this book. I am really happy that he gives an alternative performance for CSB gimmick. Good card stuff and all in all a good purchase. A very heavy magic book with good illustrations and very good articles including scripting. I believe David put a lot of effort into this "Tome" of magic. Huge book, lots of tricks, a good buy!
I Agree, a Great Book Report this review

This book by the wonderful David Regal takes you into his mind, not from an output perspective but from the paths his mind takes in regards to the art of magic and it's logical direction(s) and diversions and resulting performance pieces. It's a thick book, packed with magical nibblets throughout.

Very well written, most recent collection of David Regal's high quality magic. The layout and production look terrific. Great thinking and lots of variety. Bills, coins, a glass, bottle, th***d, finger rings, d**k switches, a couple of c**p cup routines, ideas on scripting, and various sleights are included, as are cards of course. Many excellent ideas on presentations and audience management. The card magic alone makes this a must-have for a card guy. One non-card routine in this book sells as a separate trick package with great potential for developing one's show. There are many commercial routines here. If you are already a Regal fan, then buy it! If you're not familiar with David Regal, then this is as great a place to start.

Let me start off by saying that the reason that I gave this 4 stars and not 5 was only due to the fact that I am not a huge Ace trick guy. Granted there are a few that I use and love to perform, although they are not at the top of my list. With that being said, the thought and creativity that went into each and every routine is priceless.
As I progress in my magic years and experience I am becoming more and more fascinated with not just the plot or effect but the thinking that goes into each sleight and action associated with a routine... every action has a purpose.
There are various effects with cards, coins, and various other objects. Although, the thing that made this a great purchase for myself was the theory of magic that David discusses throughout the book in his essays. He has a lot of experience and wisdom to share with the magic community and I'm glad he took the time to write this book.
Approaching Magic is not just a book of tricks, it's a wealth of information for the serious magic student. If you want to improve your skills then this is a must buy in my book (no pun intended).

Not often have I been immediately overwhelmed by a book like I have with David Regal's 'Approaching Magic'. All I can say is to buy it, raise the open side towards the sky, leaving its spine on the table (it's a 500 page monster head) and flip slowly through the pages from front to back. You will experience a buzz from doing that alone. You will see passing masterworks that are now at your disposal, to unfold to the public and make them look at you with the perplex expression you so desire, wondering if you truly are a wizard or something. You're not of course, you're simply a magician learning to become one. If Renoir was a magician, he'd been David Regal. I recommend getting this book while it's still available.
