"It's not a gift at all," he'll tell you. "Any child can do it . . .With twenty years practice."
What will he teach?
Bob offers solid routines, interesting theoretical observations and straight-shooting practical advice. Even if you don't perform any mentalism at all, you will still learn a tremendous amount from his approach and professional insights.
In this Penguin LIVE lecture, Bob will be covering many of the effects from his new book, "The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy, Volume 2: Fundamentals." He'll also be dealing extensively with Q&A routines, billet work, Fourth Dimensional Variations and Swami technique.
Bob will also go over The Ultimate Add-a-Number, Remote Viewing Variations, presentational techniques, Mentalism in the 21st Century, and just about anything else that comes to mind.
Bob's lectures tend to be very free form and are "lectures," not dealer demos or strict effect/method demonstrations.
Bob Cassidy is a repository of wisdom and this lecture will be packed with usable, real-world information that will resonate with magician and mentalist alike.
Who is he?
When asked if his ability is a gift granted to only a few, Bob Cassidy will just shake his head and smile. He knows only too well that it took nearly twenty years of hard work to develop the skills which seem to come to him so naturally on stage.
A native of Kearny, New Jersey, Cassidy entered the world of show business at the age of twelve, appearing on television’s Original Amateur Hour as a magician.
Later, while serving in the United States Navy as a communications specialist, he developed an act in which he displayed his virtually photographic memory and a remarkable sense of intuition. It was during this time that he began an in-depth study of the powers of the mind which led to the creation of the mentalism demonstration he presents today.
After his discharge from the service Bob completed his education and went to work performing for Holland America Cruises, where he honed his skills and introduced entirely new concepts to the art of mentalism. Two hundred cruises later he would write three books on the principles he developed during this period of his performing career.
Since then Bob has performed at nightclubs and showplaces throughout the country. In 1982 he shocked audiences with a telepathic version of Russian roulette in which he could detect, while blindfolded and without touching them, which of four pistols was not loaded. The selected weapon was placed to his head and fired. Of course he had chosen the empty gun.
That same year, while wearing a stainless steel blindfold and using only his memory to guide him, he drove a borrowed Mercedes at high speed through a human obstacle course at the St. Louis Playboy Club.
These stunts led to his first performance at Hollywood's famed Magic Castle, where he has lectured to his peers and entertained on a regular basis.
While his experience and educational background have made him a firm believer in psychic phenomena, he does not claim to use psychic abilities in his shows.
"ESP," he states, "is not an ability which we can rely upon to be convincingly displayed from the stage."
Instead, he claims that his startling performances of thought reading are simply the result of the applied principals of mentalism, psychology and lateral thinking.

I may be a ‘voice in the wilderness’, but I was quite disappointed in the highly-touted Bob Cassidy Live lecture. There was little new in the almost-four-hour session. With the exception of a unique use for a peek wallet, his other effects have been demonstrated and explained again and again. The three envelope routine, for example, has shown up in at least three of Bob’s books and his earlier Mental Miracles DVD. The same is true of most of the other effects that he demonstrated.
Far too much time was dedicated irrelevant stories about ‘the good old days’. These may have been amusing, but they're not what I’d paid to see. In fact, the anecdotes resulted in a time crunch which forced Bob to run through his routines and explanations very quickly.
Lastly, Bob may be a ‘functioning alcoholic’, but witnessing him repeatedly fill his coffee cup with (what I presume to be) rum and coke was very much out of place. Even President Obama manages to keep his smoking habit off camera.
‘Sorry, but I regret having spent nearly $25 to see the same old-same old.

Whilst I genuinely appreciate Bob Cassidy's contribution to mentalism, I feel aggrieved at paying for 4 hours of wild-eyed semi-inebriated rambling, regurgitated product and punctuated with toilet breaks.
I learnt nothing new from this lecture other than Bob Cassidy has no respect for his audience and apparently not a lot for himself either.
The only 'innovation' over his previously released material was combining "Te**il" with his signature piece, but that was not a great leap for anyone that has actually used this effect before.
At times I felt embarrassed for Dan Harlan, having to plug the holes in the 'sinking ship'. I wish someone had told him that Sandy was actually called Stacey, but how could you not know where the Sh**on envelope was when asked?
I would like to know if Mr Cassidy thought this was his 'finest hour' or his 'swansong'.

What a car wreck ! ive know bob casiddy since I was a kid when I spent almost every Saturday at the Mecca magic store in east orange new jersey where he was employed and taught me many things..
I am a student of much of his work. I’ve read and own many of his books.
I was a member of his on line website thing for a short while as well.
First to watch a man with an admitted drinking problem fall off the wagon in plan sight
During a lecture that is seen all over the world was the most amateurish and sad thing to witness a performer do
Showing the stage no respect is the worst of all sins
Taking bathroom breaks, slurring words, winging it ,
was an insult to us all. He has contributed so much great material over the years
To just present the same old stuff and not get into so many other effects he could have talked about was such a lost opportunity and a big disappointment. It just shows he was on auto pilot and more concerned with getting a buzz on .
Dan was unprepared to guide him threw the myriad of material he could have explained and/or discussed, so he just cackled threw the lecture with his annoying laugh and interruptions
bob was unprepared so he just BSed his way threw it. He did not fool me.
In the end it was as fascinating to watch as is” the jersey shore” reality show if you like that kind of thing.
Lectures and booze don't mix Report this review

This was my intro to Bob Cassidy. I watched with friends from my magic club who thought this was embarrassing and these are guys in their 20s who love going out on the weekends.
Cassidy obviously has a lifetime of work to share but I felt sorry for him. The longer the lecture goes the more he slurs his words and rambles on and on with a rabid dog look in his eyes.
I felt like I did learn some things but not being able to lay off the booze to present the lecture was disrespectful to Penguin and the audience.

Bob Cassidy is a huge influence on Mentalism today but seeing him drunk was a heart breaker. I was a real let down to see him in this pathetic light

The information from this lecture is better presented and taught in Bob Cassidy's Mental Miracles DVD.
This is not to say that the material shared isn't some of the best mentalism available anywhere, it's just not the best version of it.
For Cassidy complete-ists only.

As Dan Harlan noted during this Penguin LIVE event, Bob Cassidy wanted the lecture to be free-form, and it was. I would hesitate to call this a lecture, though there were aspects of that. Bob taught the same effects he did on Mental Miracles, however, this event was so much more. It was like getting to hang out with Bob and pick his brains. I tried to watch the event live, but I had problems with the connection, so I abandoned it. When I downloaded the lecture and began watching it, there were times I regretted I was not able to submit questions (which I would have done while it streamed live). But, despite that, I felt that the questions that were submitted, along with those from Dan and the audience, covered everything I would wanted asked.
There is so much to learn from the conversations. In a matter of minutes, Bob gave a wonderful approach to Jazz Q&A (not explored in-depth, but he gives a way to get at least three questions ahead). It wasn't a full Q&A act, but the pointers were incredible, stuff I had never heard anywhere else. He also, in mere seconds, explains the basics of The Return of the White Dwarf.
Like Richard Osterlind did with his first L&L DVD (in that he basically taught his complete act), Bob essentially taught his act. Wait to you see the new stuff he came up with for his Name/Place Routine.
Also, I have a TeleThought Peek Wallet that I have not used lately, when I heard Bob and Dan talk about making things even more impossible (very late in the lecture), I thought I need to dust off the TeleThought Wallet.
I very much enjoyed this. Some of the language I felt was unnecessary, but that is what you get with Bob. His persona and my persona are not the same, but I learned a lot from him.

Yes, the man was drunk. Yes, these were not the strongest renditions of his professional effects and the lecture was a bit less than professional, for this I reduce it to four stars... However, top notch material, Very Very entertaining and funny. Disrespectful? Maybe in some way depending on the way you look at it, he didn't bring his A game, though A material IT IS. I will definitely be performing some of the effects he shared, and even if not exactly as he presented them, I learned A LOT of principles that will help me strengthen my skills as a psychic entertainer.

i have a feeling what was shared and taught might be over-looked by some...this was a lecture by a master mindreader, someone who has performed for decades under all kinds of circumstances...listen and learn from his hard won experience....
Money doesn't often buy you all those things in the one purchase. Nearly FOUR HOURS worth of Bob Cassidy. The man who consults for tv shows, performed all over the world, and created so many subtle and amazing presentations.
Put your magic tricks to one side, learn to be a natural and confident mentalist instead... be prepared for home-truths, in the field experience, straight as an arrow methodologies yet devious in their execution. Tell people the place they are thinking of, tell people the name of someone dear to them, see how a p*** wallet SHOULD be used. All these things and more are within.
The man blazes with energy even now, he passion and his care for the art of mentalism is there for all to see.
Pay up, buckle up, settle down and take note from the most masterful of all mentalists...9.5/10

I almost didn't buy this because of the negative reviews. However, I am glad that I did. I think that serious students of mentalism will find this an excellent lecture. If you're a beginner, I would recommend that you put this on your wish list, get a bit more experience and then buy this for some wonderful gems of wisdom from a true master of the art.
In many ways, Mr Cassidy was in character as "devil-may-care", immature, larrikin, dirty old man. He added alcoholic to this. His language was coarse at times (and unfortunately a censored version is not available).
Despite all this, this lecture has everything a mentalist would want from the scope of this kind of lecture.
Don't expect a super-master class for seasoned professionals, but also don't expect a beginner-style "trick-method-trick-method" affair either.
He explains a lot about the thinking behind his show and teaches many of the effects that make it up.
Dan does a great job at keeping the master mind reader in check and the live audience obviously appreciated it as much as I did.
Highly recommended; I don't regret buying it.
