What will he teach?

Dagger and Rope
This is a super clean and clever cut and restored rope using a very intimidating dagger.

Perrier with a Twist
A staple of Kevin’s close up show. It is a multi-phase coin in bottle routine that is especially great for strolling restaurant work. This is the real work for the worker.

The Knots
Kevin shows a rope, holds it outward, does a spin and there are 5 knots tied in the rope.

Tennis Court
Kevin will explain how to produce 15 people on an open tennis court! He will also discuss the process how he found the idea.

KJ Newspaper Tear
This nugget came from a contest act Kevin created years ago. The paper is torn, a piece is accidentally dropped, the paper is restored, the missing piece matches! Most stop there. Kevin rubs the piece on the hole and it visibly restores and Kevin hands out the paper as a souvenir!

The Floating Rose
This is a signature piece of Kevin’s. Kevin is currently in the big touring show called The Illusionists. The Floating Rose is one of the most talked about routines in the show in the reviews. Kevin taught this to David Copperfield many years ago and David continues to do it in his show even now. A paper napkin is crumpled into a ball. It dances on Kevin’s hand and arm. He gives the power to a little girl to be able to make it dance too. He twists the napkin into a paper rose. It floats inches from the girl. He lights it on fire as it floats and it bursts into a ball of fire. Kevin reaches into the flame and it has changed into a real rose!!! He gives it to the girl as a souvenir. Life is good.

Rose Oil
This is a subtle and clever way to make a paper flower smell exactly like a real rose. Don’t underestimate this one.

Floating Rose Dispenser
This is the commando version of dispensing IT that Kevin uses every night onstage. This has been created through years of trial and error.

Invisible Thread Theory
Kevin has some thoughts on this wonderful assistant called invisible thread. Flying. Perform fickle nickel – no explanation

Water Bottle Dispenser
This is a great way to dispense IT is a real world situation, like at a picnic.

Psyco-can-esis
This is a very useful and funny gag from Mark Kornhauser. The MC or comedy magician shows a bent fork and talks a little about the famous Uri Geller. He explains that he can do much better. He puts the fork away and shows an empty Coke can. He proceeds to crush the can with only the powers of his mind. Then is that was not enough, he unbends the can the same way!!!

The Mental Effect
Kevin tosses out a brick to the audience. Eventually one person is chosen to be for sure not a stooge. Kevin pumps him for information. He then shows an envelope that has been hanging in full view the entire show. It is taken down and opened only to find a second sealed envelope. Inside that is a large piece of paper with a sentence that correctly predicted what the audience member would say!!! Now you don’t have to carry around a huge chalkboard.

The Cast Appearance
Kevin has found a new technique for some amazing illusions. One of them he will explain. It will allow you to produce 6 people instantly on a very thin table!!! Kevin made this to produce his cast at the end of his show for his bows.

The Duck Decapitation
One of the more shocking effects Kevin has invented. This one will get you more gigs.

Fork in Eye and Parmesan Cheese
There are two quick gags that are a lot of fun to do in a restaurant with your friends.

Water in Ear
This is a funny little gag that came from the brilliant Karrell Fox. You invite a kid on stage. Get him to take a drink of water. You look in his ear and proceed to blow a stream of water out his other ear. Hopefully hitting the other kids sitting on the floor.

Costume Change and Curtain
This is something Kevin came up with years ago for a contest act. It was in storage for many years and recently he brought it back into service for The Illusionists show. It gets a very strong reaction. He gave this effect to Rudy Coby years ago and Rudy turned it into his World’s Most Dangerous Card Trick effect. Kevin’s curtain design is also very interesting.

Animated Card thru Balloon of Death
You perform a simple card in balloon effect for your audience. You then teach them exactly how you did it. But then they are shown how to get out of a certain difficult situation and they are left even more baffled when the card visibly penetrates the inflated balloon and animates.

The Knot Tube
Kevin will discuss his project with Gaetan Bloom called Full Bloom. It is a new two volume set of Gaetan’s ideas that is nearly 750 pages. He will demonstrate this trick from the book.

He'll also talk about...

  • How to stimulate your creativity
  • Working out your creative muscles
  • Shock value and how to add it to your show, duck head, play doh, goldfish, harming small animals
  • Some clever presentations for some existing effects – Joel Hodgson and Eric Buss
  • Kevin and Antonio – stories and our history
  • America’s Got Talent
  • Touring with The Illusionists
  • Working at the White House for Obama – napkin story, flash paper story
  • Indonesia TV – Kevin was seen live by 200 million people
This is going to be one of those lectures that will astound you and blow you away. You're going to learn tries, tested and proven magic from a guy who has literally performed across the globe.

Who is he?

Kevin got interested in the art of magic at a very early age. He remembers seeing his first magic performance and how it made that 10 year old feel. He decided early on that performing magic for the world was going to be his life's calling. He feels blessed every day that he can do what he loves and gets to make people happy. It is a huge honor and responsibility to remind people how to feel the sense of wonder they had as a child. Becoming an adult, and the daily activities of the world, take that feeling away and Kevin tries to give it back.

Kevin's style of performance is anything but conventional. His unique comedy and magic has gained him a reputation as a world class visual artist. Kevin is like a modern P.T. Barnum. His art vision was to assemble the most unique artists on the planet, creating a very special show.

His fresh approach has allowed him to headline in some of the world's top showrooms and theatres. He has performed on television in 25 countries. In the US he has performed on all the major television networks and many cable channels. Some of his past performances include starring at the Crazy Horse in Paris, a Royal Command Performance for the Prince of Monaco, headlining in Jeff Kutash's Splash at the Riveria in Las Vegas, Caesar's Palace, Tropicana and Bally's just to name a few.

Kevin is also a very prolific magical inventor. Not only is his show original, he has created many things that have been performed in the shows of other famous magicians like Doug Henning, Mark Wilson and David Copperfield.

Most Entertaining Lecture I Have Seen Report this review
Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on February 24th, 2014
Most of the material in this lecture not make it into my act because of the venues where I perform. Having said that, this was probably the most entertaining lecture I have seen from the Penguin LIVE offerings. When it comes to learning mentalism, Richard Osterlind's second lecture is my favorite. When it comes to cards, I loved Howard Hamburg's lecture. But Kevin James was a different experience for me.

During this lecture, I just sat back and enjoyed the magic and the creativity exhibited by Kevin. His thinking is incredible and, though cliche, it is out of the box. Right out of the gate, you could tell this lecture was going to be different. It was just one thing after another. I felt I got my money's worth in the first half-hour.

This lecture is jam packed with magic and useful ideas for the restaurant magician, the stand-up performer, the stage and the illusionist.

One of the things I will be able to use is an effect where five knots appear on a rope. About five years ago, I paid nearly $30 for an effect where a knot magically appeared on a piece of rope. With the effect Kevin teaches, you will be able to make five knots appear for much less.

Perhaps what I appreciated the most is seeing how he structured routines, especially the Perrier with a Twist. Any one phase of the routine would have been good performed by itself. However, it just keeps escalating and escalating to a wonderful climax.

Topit workers will be intrigued by his take on a similar principle, but totally different. Stage performers who do confabulation routines will love his method. Interesting in doing a costume change, he teaches the basics. Want to play some gags while at a restaurant, they are in this lecture.

He showed his work in the Floating Rose and gave some tips on how to heighten the performance, something it took him 20 years to learn. For someone who has dabbled with IT, it was nice hearing some of the conditions which make it better.

His Card in Balloon will leave you speechless, even when he explains how it is done. The first time he does it with a black, opaque balloon, and it looks nice. Then he teaches you how he did it with a clear balloon, and it is a true magical moment.

If you want to broaden your understanding of magic in close-up, parlor, stage and television settings, then you will want to add this to your collection.

Thank you Penguin for bringing the great Kevin James to us all. Kevin delivered an excellent lecture, filled not only with great material, but also very good advice for the working pro. Just his toppit work was worth the price of admission, what brilliant thinking!

He thoroughly explained his true classic "The Floating Rose" like no one else could. Even if you own this effect already, you should watch his work on it.

This lecture includes several still marketed effects, all very well explained and well thought out. Keven is a joy to watch and he did an excellent job of making everything easy to understand. Even a beginner will find something and the seasoned performer will learn a lot too.

He tells about performing at the white house and has a hilarious story about the experience. You'll love this lecture, it's has everything, not your run of the mill tricks, Kevin Delivered a top 5 lecture. Get this one, you're going to love it.

Kevin James is AH-MAZING! He really is the nicest/most creative man in magic. Wow! There have been some wonderful lectures...but this just might be one of my favorites. This man is humble and just down right love-able! I already own the dvd for the floating rose and he gave a nice breakdown about it...but you should still buy the dvd if you want extra info/more in depth info on the handling. (Just a beautiful trick)

I like that he has some wacky tricks, gags...like the fork and eye. I am sorry but that is right up my alley. I seriously laughed out loud.

His rope and knot idea is awesome. I already gathered the materials and made that a reality. I'm going to add it to my rope routine....NOW!!! I love how he talked about creativity. How some of his ideas formed from something he had seen long ago...

Kevin James is awesome! I mean he even got G. Bloom to get two books of material together and even shows a trick from the book. We are very lucky that Kevin James exists and is so very generous.

Thanks again Penguin for getting another wonderful stage magician. YAY!!!

You should watch this lecture. This man does not seem to let his ego lead his life...he seems very much from the heart...super talented. Super creative. Super humble. Super Super Super.

I was a fan-fan...NOW...a super-fan-fan!

FANTASTIC lecture!! Report this review

The floating rose was worth the price of the lecture ( that's a $40 dvd on it's own ). He taught all the nuances he taught David Copperfield, who performed it on Network Television and in his shows.

Kevin taught miracles to use close up, stage or parlour ( including illusions that can play on any size stage ).

The magic taught was versatile enough for any age audience, from kid shows to adults.

Kevin James killed it!

I've very pleased with this lecture He presented an excellent lecture with many great illusions mostly for the stage but also taught some close up tricks too.
You will have to make most of the tricks Kevin explained (some items you may have at home), but it's worth it! If you are a magician who won't put in the time to make a trick work, doesn't like tinkering to make a trick right, then I suggest you STILL download the lecture for the advice and funny FUNNY stories Kevin shared, just hearing the "3 boobies" story was priceless. As was his incident when leaving the White House after performing for the President.

I could write about all the great things about each and EVERY effect taught in this lecture… You can't go wrong if you're a serious performer.

Thanks Penguin Magic for one sweet lecture!

This is BY FAR the best lecture I've seen yet. Of course, I love the creative aspect of things, so that may be why I think so. But honestly, even if you are just unsure which lecture to start with, THIS IS THE ONE!

Excellent, but... Report this review

If you're into large scale illusions or the use of gimmicks for stage and parlor, then you will find this lecture useful. I thought the performances were excellent and the explanations clear, but almost all the effects rely on gimmicks, even to the clothing. I use magic to compliment my corporate speaking engagements and much of the set up required would not fit that venue. However, I still think this lecture is worth seeing for its educational value.

His name in "the illusionists" is the inventor, never has a name been more suited. coin in bottle, salt pour and floating rose all now play part in my own individial acts, i specially love the very VERY sneeky anchor for the rose, i dont want to say anything but its very bold and who doesnt love bold??! iv used it to great effect. so much packed into one lecture its bursting at the sides. Another lecturer who needs to return!!! must watch!

In this lecture, you don't only learn magic. You also learn ideas that Kevin James has come up with through the years that you can add in your routines. The only reason I gave it 4 stars, is because all of his effects will need other props. But luckily, they aren't that hard to find. Also, I wish that he also went into more detail in how he made the gimmicks/props in his tricks. Other than that, it's a great buy. It was my first lecture I bought on Penguin, and I'll now be buying more!
